James Gunn drops multiple teasers for Superman, which has a trailer coming this week
As a cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt and a particular affinity for superhero movies, I must say that the anticipation for Superman: Legacy is palpable. Having witnessed the rise and fall (and sometimes rise again) of various cinematic universes, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation.
The upcoming live-action Superman film, previously known as “Superman: Legacy,” has been rebranded simply as “Superman.” This fresh adaptation stars David Corenswet in the role of Superman. Known for his work on “Guardians of the Galaxy,” director James Gunn is at the helm of this project. Warner Bros. Discovery is banking heavily on this movie to establish a brand-new DC Cinematic Universe, making its success crucial.
Warner Bros. Discovery is gradually building anticipation for the upcoming film, as they have unveiled not just one, but two sneak peeks ahead of a teaser trailer coming out this Thursday. Essentially, they are providing multiple glimpses before the main event. The initial clip features Corenswet in his Superman outfit flying through the sky, with the instruction to “look up.
At that location, you’ll find a softly played, wistful rendition of John Williams’ iconic Superman theme, which gained popularity following the release of Superman: The Movie in 1978, starring Christopher Reeve. The original melody is extremely well-known and significantly more grandiose.
We received an additional sneak peek for the upcoming trailer, and it focuses on a Superman emblem on the ground, presumably within the Fortress of Solitude. The message displayed is to “Look skyward.” We now have a slogan!
Keep an eye out towards the end of this week for a teaser trailer, more like a sneak peek of Superman… and a bit later, we’ll release the complete full-length trailer. These anticipation periods can be quite prolonged.
The upcoming “Superman” film is set to premiere in theaters on July 25, 2025. We’ll find out if it can kick off a new cinematic universe effectively. In the past, movies about Batman have generally been more popular, but Superman hasn’t fared as well on the silver screen. The attempt to establish a new series with Brandon Routh as Clark Kent didn’t sustain after 2006’s “Superman Returns” underperformed at the box office compared to expectations. Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman was more successful – “Man of Steel” made a fortune in 2013 – but the income decreased afterwards, with both “Batman v Superman” and “Justice League” dividing fans.
Could Corenswet and Gunn potentially produce the blockbuster Superman films that WBD seeks? It’s not wise to undervalue Gunn. He transformed the relatively unknown superhero team, Guardians of the Galaxy, into substantial profits for Disney and Marvel. His latest creation, the animated series “Creature Commandos“, which features a motley crew of anti-heroes, is winning hearts on Max. However, Superman will truly determine his capabilities.
In 2026, a follow-up to the movie “The Batman” starring Robert Pattinson will be released, while James Gunn is working on another Batman film titled “The Brave and the Bold” featuring an unannounced actor. It’s highly likely that both movies will be successful, given Batman’s reputation for box office success. Regarding Superman, it remains to be seen who will take on the role.
