James Gunn Didn’t Call Out The Rock For The Whole Henry Cavill Return As Superman Debacle, But We Know How That Cameo Happened

Recently, spectators have been introduced to a fresh interpretation of Superman on the big screen through James Gunn’s movie bearing the same name. Interestingly, there was a time when it appeared Henry Cavill might reprise his role as the Man of Steel again. This was because Cavill made a brief appearance as the character in The Rock’s film, “Black Adam.” More recently, Gunn has shared his thoughts on this situation, expressing some perplexity over how things unfolded. It should be noted that The Rock is known to have played a significant role in orchestrating that cameo.

James Gunn Talks About The Situation Involving Henry Cavill’s Return For Black Adam

The sequence of incidents surrounding the Superman/Black Adam scenario appears quite intricate. However, James Gunn offered additional insights during a podcast interview for his 2025 movie release. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn mentioned being approached to direct a fresh Superman storyline by Warner Bros., and later being appointed as co-head of DC Studios. He then spoke about his surprise upon hearing that Henry Cavill was set to return, considering he had his own project in the works.

It appears we were discussing whether [producer Peter Safran and I] could accept the job offer from DC Studios, and we were negotiating with David Zaslav and his legal team about our contracts. The day our agreement was finalized, suddenly they announced that Henry Cavill would return, leaving me puzzled as we had a clear plan to revive Superman. It seemed unfair towards Cavill, and it was disappointing. However, there was a power vacuum at the time, and many people were pushing their own agendas for DC Studios. I’m trying to be tactful here… It seems some individuals had different ideas about what they wanted to do with DC and were trying to impose those plans.

According to the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, the initial plan for Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav was not what had been intended. As a result, James Gunn and Peter Safran (the co-head of DC Studios) needed to have a conversation with Henry Cavill to clarify the situation. Although Gunn didn’t bring up Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson during his interview, past on-set insights reveal that Johnson and the Black Adam team had been working to bring Cavill back to the franchise.

How Was The Rock Involved In Superman’s Return To The DCEU?

In 2022, the appearance of the Last Son of Krypton in the Black Adam mid-credits scene ignited a buzz among fans, yet it also sparked numerous questions. The Hollywood Reporter provided some insight, and it seems that both The Rock and director Jaume Collet-Serra were moved to include Superman in the movie after testing an image of him in silhouette with his distinctive insignia during a scene. This revelation only heightened their desire to bring Henry Cavill back into his superhero role, reminiscent of his days as the Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Subsequently, it’s said that Dwayne Johnson made a strong case for bringing Henry Cavill back into the picture. Interestingly enough, both Johnson and Cavill were managed by the same person, who backed Johnson in his efforts to reinstate Cavill. Despite the initial opposition from Walter Hamada (as he had other Superman-related plans), Johnson bypassed this objection by approaching Warner Bros.’ heads of film, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. In the end, these executives agreed to grant Johnson’s wish.

After making a surprise appearance, Superman returned, causing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to respond. The famous actor admitted that he and his team had worked tirelessly for years to bring this character back. He also expressed enthusiasm about having Black Adam and Superman fight in a movie eventually. By early 2023, after James Gunn took charge at DC Studios, Johnson discussed the Superman issue during the Oscars. He said that under the circumstances, all they could do was make the best film possible.

It’s clear that things have undergone significant shifts, given that the DC Universe narrative is now being steered fully by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Given the changes in cameos and creative direction, Gunn confessed to Josh Horowitz of ‘Happy Sad Confused’ that it was difficult to inform Henry Cavill about these changes. However, he remains open to casting Cavill for a different role in the future. Whether this happens or not remains to be seen, but in the meantime, you can watch Cavill’s portrayal of Superman by subscribing to HBO Max.
