James Gunn responded to the criticism in a Threads post, where he often connects with fans. He defended both the skills of the filmmaker in question and the way movies are made as a team effort.
If someone is criticizing Christina Hodson’s writing, they probably haven’t actually read one of her scripts. She was a key part of our initial DCU planning. Also, it’s unfair to evaluate my work based on movies directed by others, because directors often make significant changes to the original screenplay.
How Important Is Brave and the Bold for the Dcu?
As a huge DC fan, I’m telling you, The Brave and the Bold is a massive deal for where DC Studios is heading. It’s going to give us the definitive Batman for the new DC Universe – a completely separate Batman from the one Robert Pattinson plays in The Batman movies. The story’s inspired by a really famous comic book run by Grant Morrison, and it’s all about Bruce Wayne finding out he has a son, Damian, who’s been secretly trained by the League of Assassins. This Batman is a fresh take on the character – he’ll have three unique traits and hasn’t been seen in a live-action film before, making things particularly exciting.
Batman is as famous and important as Superman when it comes to DC Comics. How he’s introduced into the new DC Universe could really shape the future of the whole franchise. Because fans know how crucial he is, they have high hopes and want the best writers and artists working on the character.
Andy Muschietti, the director of The Flash, is still set to direct The Brave and the Bold, a choice that initially upset some fans. However, Muschietti recently impressed audiences with his work on the HBO series It: Welcome to Derry. The show was a success both with critics and viewers, demonstrating that a previous disappointment doesn’t necessarily reflect a director’s overall talent.
The reasoning behind choosing Hodson is similar. Her work on the Bumblebee screenplay showed she’s skilled at creating believable and touching connections between characters, even within large-scale action movies. Bumblebee worked so well because it centered on the relationship between a young person and their guardian – the same core dynamic that will drive The Brave and the Bold.
