In a recent interview, James Gunn labeled some fans as “racists” while also stating he isn’t directly supervised by Warner Bros. regarding projects within the DCU. He clarified he has no oversight from WB on DCU projects.
I’ve noticed a frustrating pattern in Hollywood, and it really gets under my skin. Whenever a franchise doesn’t do well, or if audiences simply aren’t happy with something, the studio folks and creators seem to immediately try and shift the blame *onto us*, the fans. It’s like their go-to move – they’ll slap labels like “racist,” “sexist,” or “toxic” on anyone who voices a concern. And now, unfortunately, James Gunn, who’s leading the future of DC, seems to be doing the same thing. It’s just…disappointing to see.
Gunn’s Remark in GQ
During a recent interview with GQ, James Gunn explained the response to the surprising alternate Earth reveal in Peacemaker Season 2. The alternate reality John Cena’s Peacemaker has been visiting throughout the season is actually Earth X, a world controlled by N*zis and featuring fascist imagery even on the American flag.
Rather than accepting that certain fans disagreed with the new creative choices, James Gunn reacted strongly, accusing them of being “racists.”
He stated, “Some people with racist views have called me divisive, but I’m comfortable with that. I’m fine with letting those individuals fade away.” He added, “This episode has been the most popular so far, which is really encouraging.”
This is a concerning statement for those who legitimately criticized his work. James Gunn implies that if you didn’t enjoy the episode, you might be one of the racists.
Fan-Blaming: A Hollywood Pattern
Gunn’s tactic is hardly new. We’ve seen it repeatedly:
- Star Wars branded unhappy fans as sexist and racist after pushback on new characters.
 - Marvel Studios dismissed fan criticism of unpopular storylines as “toxic.”
 - Stars from Rings of Power and The Acolyte used accusations of bigotry to reframe underwhelming reception.

It’s a common pattern: when a project doesn’t go well or causes disagreement, people tend to blame the viewers or listeners, rather than the decisions made during its creation. Gunn’s recent statements follow this predictable trend.
“I Can Do Whatever I Want”
Equally striking in the GQ piece is Gunn’s admission of just how much authority he holds in the DCU.
Regarding Peacemaker, he explained: “I have complete creative freedom with the character-and really, with anything I work on. I’m able to make my own decisions and I’m essentially my own boss.”

A lot of people thought Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav still had some influence over James Gunn. This makes sense when you consider that even Kathleen Kennedy and Kevin Feige, who lead Lucasfilm and Marvel respectively, still report to Disney CEO Bob Iger.
However, Gunn even confessed that despite receiving resistance from “various sources,” he continued forward with his plans. This indicates that Gunn doesn’t just ignore criticism from fans-he also dismisses concerns raised by executives regarding his creative choices.
This news should worry Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders and DC fans who were hoping for a consistent, overarching plan. James Gunn isn’t positioning himself as someone who will carefully protect established characters. Instead, he’s acting like an independent creator, answerable to no one.
Why It Matters
As a lifelong movie lover, I’m really disappointed with how James Gunn handled the recent criticism. By unfairly lumping genuine fans who offered constructive feedback in with racist voices, he’s basically stopped any real conversation. It feels like if you just wanted to see a different direction for the story, you’re now instantly branded with the ugliest possible label. And honestly, when that’s how things are handled, there’s no incentive for creators to take responsibility when things don’t quite land. It just shuts down any possibility of accountability for creative missteps.

Rather than trying to understand why dedicated fans are dissatisfied, Hollywood now tends to simply dismiss and attack them. James Gunn’s statements suggest he’s adopting this same approach with the DCU. Instead of introspection-wondering about the reasons for fan unhappiness-the industry now resorts to demonization.
Final Thought
James Gunn is absolutely entitled to stand up for his artistic vision. However, labeling critics as “racists” is not just a simplistic approach-it’s damaging. It risks losing fans, erodes confidence, and demonstrates the kind of hubris that has been a problem in Hollywood lately. This kind of response isn’t helpful.

As a long-time fan, I truly believe that for DC to not just survive, but really flourish, those in charge need to shift their approach. Instead of pointing fingers at the fans, they need to start showing us the respect we deserve. It’s so important that they listen to what we, the audience, want and value. I really think that’s the key to a brighter future for them.
