James Corden explains Gavin & Stacey finale twist
As a longtime fan of Gavin & Stacey, I must say that the 2024 Christmas special was nothing short of brilliant! The plot twist with Smithy and Sonia had me absolutely hooked, and it’s clear that James Corden and Ruth Jones truly understood their characters.

James Corden wanted to “trick everybody” with the plot line of Gavin and Stacey‘s final episode.
Five long years have passed since the nail-biting cliffhanger of the 2019 special, where my beloved character Nessa got down on one knee and proposed to the lovable Smithy. On Christmas Day this year, I was overjoyed as the hit show made its triumphant return, treating us to a heartwarming festive special!
In the latest installment, it was revealed that Smithy hadn’t provided Nessa with a genuine response to her proposal for marriage, as he was secretly planning to wed Sonia (played by Laura Aikman) instead.
During the discussion at the final episode screening, Corden shared that the secret of Aikman reprising her role as Sonia wasn’t revealed until the show premiered in order to maintain the storyline’s secrecy and surprise viewers by making them believe Smithy was marrying Nessa instead.
At three in the morning, an idea struck me, which I shared with Ruth by saying, “What do you think about creating an illusion where people believe they are watching a wedding between Nessa and Smithy for the first six to seven minutes?” he expressed.
After the 2019 special, a common question we encountered from people was, “What is he saying?” or simply, “What’s his message?
“They would never say, ‘Who did he choose?’ I don’t even think it was in people’s peripheral.”
Regarding Jones’ response, Corden went on to say, “On my commute to work, I recall discussing with Ruth, ‘Could we possibly attempt this?’ The unique aspect of our show creation process is that whenever an idea pops up in my mind, I simply continue sharing it with Ruth.
In simpler terms, “I’m always full of ideas and curiosity, asking ‘What if?’ and sometimes Ruth dismisses them, but when she agrees with an ‘Oh, yeah!’ I know we’re on to something good.
Fortunately, Smithy’s wedding to Sonia was prevented when his relatives intervened and disrupted the ceremony. Ultimately, Smithy discovered his affection for Nessa, and they got married in a small, intimate ceremony instead.
On Christmas Day, the finale pulled in the greatest number of viewers in more than ten years, averaging approximately 12.3 million people tuning in.
