James Corden delights Robin Hood pantomime audience as he makes surprise appearance at the London Palladium – after Gavin & Stacey finale
As a dedicated follower of James Corden’s career, I must say it’s been quite the rollercoaster ride, reminiscent of the pantomime performances he so delightfully graced this weekend at the London Palladium. After spending eight years hosting The Late Show in the US and seemingly falling out of favor with the British entertainment industry, James has returned to his home country like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
His surprise appearance as King Richard in the Robin Hood pantomime was nothing short of magical, much like the feeling I get every time I see him on stage or screen. His ability to bring joy and laughter to people is truly unparalleled, and it’s no wonder he has been embraced by the nation once more following the massive success of the Gavin & Stacey finale.
However, I must admit that I found it quite amusing when stories circulated about his reluctance to replicate his Stateside career and front a chat-show here – because it’s ‘too much work.’ After all, isn’t that what they say about pantomime rehearsals? “It’s a hard day’s night, but it’s not too good to waste”!
James’ big British comeback was certainly far from a damp squib, and I have high hopes for his future endeavors. Whether he decides to take on another chat-show or continues to enchant us with surprise appearances in shows like Robin Hood, one thing is certain – James Corden has got the magic touch!
Over the weekend, James Corden unexpectedly charmed a crowd at the London Palladium while taking part in a production of Robin Hood on stage.
On Saturday evening, the performer and comedian, who played a role in Gavin & Stacey at age 46, took on the part of King Richard within the show’s performance.
Actress Marisha Wallace, playing The Sheriff of Nottingham, posted pictures on Instagram showing her with James during his recent visit, captured backstage in a joint photo shoot.
She wrote: “Hey @j_cordon! It seems something exciting happened. The star of the moment dropped by @thelondonpalladium unexpectedly to delight our matinee crowd, taking on the role of King Richard in tonight’s show @palladiumpanto!
More snaps showed him posing with standby Robin Hood actor Chris Howell and other cast members.
In the lead roles for Robin Hood, you’ll find Julian Clary, a frequent performer in Palladium pantomimes, and Jane McDonald portraying Maid Marion.
In addition to returning for the show, you’ll see familiar faces like Paul Zerdin (previously Will Scarlet), Nigel Havers (Friar Tuck), Charlie Stemp (Alan-A-Dale), and Rob Madge (The Spirit of Sherwood) – each having graced the West End stage before.
Additionally, other well-known personalities like Sir Ian McKellen and Lee Mack have graced the show by appearing as King Richard at different points.
It seems that James has found favor with the country again, as the finale of Gavin and Stacey turned out to be extremely popular among viewers.
The final installment of the series, airing five years following its latest holiday special, garnered an astounding 12.5 million viewers on BBC.
The show was primarily conceived by James and his fellow star, Ruth Jones. They wrote the final episode in secrecy earlier this year.
His fortunes seem to have taken a turn for the better, as there has been a lot of talk over time suggesting that he wasn’t well-liked within the UK entertainment scene.
This year, James returned to Great Britain after spending eight years in the United States where he hosted The Late Show with James Corden on CBS.
Aside from lending his voice to a character in the upcoming animated Smurfs movie this summer, there are currently no known public plans or projects underway.
According to reports, he has shown hesitation about mirroring his U.S. career and hosting a talk show here, as he finds it too demanding.
Without the excitement of the Gavin and Stacey finale, it’s likely that his grand return to the British entertainment scene would have been quite underwhelming, according to those in the know.
As an over-the-moon fanboy, I can’t help but feel thrilled at the prospect of my idol making a triumphant return to the small screen! Rumor has it, as reported by the Mail On Sunday, that the show which initially catapulted him into stardom is what he’s set on reviving. Not only does this move seem like a surefire hit, but it’s also his ticket back into the spotlight where he truly belongs!
Word on the street was that there was a great anticipation that James might secure a significant contract at another place. However, he seemed to be less keen on the constant routine of hosting a late-night program, given its demanding nature and toll it takes, yet whispers suggested potential major ventures.
The television industry has found it puzzling that, besides a notable but brief performance at a London theater, there have been no significant outcomes.
It’s intriguing to ponder why. Despite James’ affinity for the spotlight and his preference for being at the center of attention, this situation clearly didn’t provide that experience for him.
‘But then bang, out of the blue, Gavin & Stacey is back and James is back on the radar.’
It appears that the strategy paid off since both fans and reviewers appreciated the episode, where James’ character, Smithy, and Ruth’s character, Nessa, eventually got married, following a poorly executed proposal by Nessa five years earlier.
