James Corden and Ruth Jones spill the beans on bizarre writing process to create Gavin & Stacey Christmas special

As a devoted fan of British comedy, I must say that I have been eagerly awaiting the return of Gavin and Stacey for quite some time now. The unique blend of humor, heartfelt moments, and relatable characters has made this show a firm favorite among viewers like myself.

James Corden and Ruth Jones have shared insights into the unusual methodology behind the creation of the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special.

The Finale, airing on BBC One this coming Wednesday.

The duo joined hosts Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby on the Capital FM Breakfast Show for an insightful chat ahead of the special launch.

They confessed to employing some unusual techniques for finding inspiration – such as an instance when a bag of chocolate buttons served as fuel during a writing session in a Heathrow Airport hotel.

‘There’s a lot of hotel rooms we’ve written in,’ James said.

Ruth intervened: ‘One of the especially unique occasions was when I was in Scotland last year, and we managed to write for just a day. Given our limited time together, we made the best use of every moment. Therefore, I traveled down to Heathrow from Inverness by airplane.’

As a devoted scribe, I hopped on the Heathrow Express and spent a day in a hotel near the runway, writing away. Let’s be honest, it wasn’t our most fruitful day of work, now was it?

In retrospect, it seems like an error, but at the moment, we were nearly on the brink of accomplishment, and the excitement was palpable. We found ourselves saying, “Let’s just give it a shot, let’s make it happen.

Typically, we aim to write between 6 and 10 pages daily when composing text, but on that particular day, it seemed like we only managed to produce about one and a half pages.

In response to Chris’s question about our script drafting methods, I shared that while we do use Post-it Notes, they aren’t as comprehensive as one might need for a detailed script.

Occasionally, I come across these items with just a couple of words written on them. To be honest, we’re not particularly mature when it comes to handling such things.

The popular TV host confessed that their hotel writing rooms looked like chaos, and further explained, “I usually remark that if someone peeked through the window at Ruth and me, they’d probably see two people taking a nap more often than not, scattered bags of chocolate buttons, sticky notes haphazardly plastered on the wall. From the outside, you wouldn’t guess that we’re working on a successful TV show.

‘You’d be thinking ‘that looks like a disaster.’

It comes shortly after James revealed he plans to work on another TV show with Ruth.

The pair appeared on Heart Radio with Jason King and Emma Bunton to talk about the highly-anticipated upcoming episode.

Jason told them: ‘I hope to see you again soon! This is the finale!’

Emma added, “Indeed, they’re often occupied, right? Could you possibly work on another piece with them?

James confirmed: ‘We’d like to,’ as Ruth gave the presenters a smile.

Jason asked: ‘Should we leave it at that?’

Emma fumed: ‘No! I want to know when. When you’re going to start writing!’

‘It might be a while, it might take us a while,’ James told them.

‘We got to find us a new idea, but we are definitely, definitely, going to give it a shot.’

Gavin and Stacey has been a huge fan favourite over the years, since it premiered in 2007.

There have been three successful series running over three years.

The drama wrapped up in 2010, but then returned nine years later for a Christmas special in 2019.

In the drama, James, Ruth, Mathew Horne, Joanna Pag, Larry Lamb, Alison Steadman, and Rob Brydon are back to play their memorable characters once again.

Enthusiasts were thrilled beyond belief upon learning that a new special event would take place during the upcoming holiday season.

Gavin and Stacey: The Finale airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One.

Tune in to Capital Breakfast with hosts Jordan North, Chris Stark, and Sian Welby each weekday from 6:00 am until 10:00 am on various radio stations throughout the UK. Alternatively, you can listen to them on Global Player, the official Capital app.
