James Cameron’s Titanic Finds New Life on Tubi 28 Years Later

Twenty-eight years after its release, the beloved romantic disaster film is a hit once again, though this time people are watching it through streaming rather than in theaters. The award-winning movie is enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to its availability on a free streaming service.

According to FlixPatrol, Titanic is currently the most popular movie on Tubi, and this is the second time in three months it’s reached the top spot. When Titanic premiered in December 1997, it was a huge hit with both critics and audiences. Critics gave it largely positive reviews, and the film quickly dominated the box office, selling out shows for weeks. As of today, 88% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes recommend the film, while audiences give it a 69% rating. By February 1998, Titanic had become the highest-grossing movie ever, surpassing Jurassic Park. It held this record until James Cameron’s Avatar came out in 2009. During its original release, Titanic earned $1.8 billion, and later re-releases added another $464 million, bringing its total worldwide box office earnings to $2.264 billion.

No One Else Is Making $2 Billion Blockbusters Like James Cameron

As of November 2025, James Cameron is the only director to have three films earn over $2 billion worldwide, with the Russo Brothers close behind with two (Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame). After the success of Titanic, Cameron spent over ten years creating his next film, the 2009 science fiction blockbuster Avatar. Avatar was revolutionary for its use of new motion capture and visual effects technology, and it became the first film to reach $2 billion in worldwide box office earnings during its original release. Cameron again dedicated a significant amount of time to developing a sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, which came out in 2022 and also achieved massive box office success.

James Cameron is expected to have another huge hit this December with the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in the Avatar series. The movie will follow Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), now leading a Na’vi family, on a new adventure. Many original cast members are returning, including Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Kate Winslet, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, and Bailey Bass, who will reprise their roles as Kiri, Colonel Miles Quaritch, Tonowari, Ronal, Lo’ak, Tuktirey, Miles “Spider” Socorro, and Tsireya, respectively.

You can now watch Titanic on Tubi. And Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released in movie theaters on December 19th.
