The Terminator series hasn’t been doing well for a while now. While the first two movies, released in 1984 and 1991, were fantastic, subsequent films have ranged from just okay to pretty bad. Even bringing back James Cameron and Linda Hamilton for 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate couldn’t revive the franchise, and the movie continued its decline.
Look, as a long-time fan, I think the Terminator franchise has been stretched pretty thin. The last four movies have all tried different things – alternate realities, soft reboots – and none of them really worked. But I’m cautiously optimistic about Terminator 7 because James Cameron is actually involved this time. It’s natural to be skeptical after so many disappointments, but his recent comments give me a little hope that he can get it back on track.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator Exit Is A Good Thing For The Franchise

When asked if Arnold Schwarzenegger would return for a seventh Terminator film after his appearance in Dark Fate, James Cameron stated definitively that he wouldn’t. He explained that the franchise needs to explore the concept of time travel and artificial intelligence in a more expansive way.
As a huge cinema fan, I have to admit Arnold Schwarzenegger made the Terminator films what they are, and he’s a massive part of why the first two – The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day – are still so popular. But if they want to keep making Terminator movies, they really need to find a fresh direction. The franchise has become this incredibly complex web of timelines, robots, and resistance fighters, and it desperately needs some truly inventive, forward-thinking sci-fi ideas to stay exciting.
For the Terminator franchise to remain successful, it needs to avoid depending too much on its past, specifically Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has been in almost every Terminator movie. This isn’t about criticizing Schwarzenegger or his age, but recognizing that the series needs new and innovative ideas – something even James Cameron agrees with.
Re-watching Terminator: Dark Fate, it’s clear the film had the potential to be great. Linda Hamilton’s return (after Judgment Day) paid respect to what came before, and the introduction of new Terminators and a new resistance leader hinted at an exciting future for the series. However, the film relied too heavily on bringing back Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, ultimately overshadowing its fresh ideas and characters.
Terminator Already Proved It Can Work Without Schwarzenegger

Terminator Salvation was the first film in the series not to feature Arnold Schwarzenegger, and considering it wasn’t very successful, it’s understandable why later movies made sure to include him.
Interestingly, two Terminator projects have succeeded even without Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which debuted in 2008 just before the film Salvation, brought the story of Skynet to television. Though it only lasted two seasons, the series gained a dedicated fanbase and was better received than any of the Terminator movies that came out after Judgment Day.
Creating a live-action Terminator TV show was a huge undertaking, but The Sarah Connor Chronicles cleverly built upon the original films. While not perfect, it captured the feel of James Cameron’s first Terminator movie more successfully than later installments like Terminator Genisys.

In 2024, the Terminator franchise ventured into animation with Terminator Zero. The film received a strong 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and successfully refreshed the series’ core concepts with a new approach. Notably, Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t appear. Instead, Timothy Olyphant took on the role of the Terminator, proving the franchise could succeed by moving away from focusing on Schwarzenegger.
These shows demonstrate that the Terminator franchise can succeed even without Arnold Schwarzenegger, as long as the story is strong and the new direction is well-executed. It simply needs a well-written script to confidently move forward – and it seems James Cameron agrees.
