James Cameron shares update on Avatar’s future following Fire and Ash’s underperformance

I was reading an update from James Cameron about what’s next for Avatar after Avatar: Fire and Ash comes out in 2025. It’s a little surprising, but Fire and Ash didn’t quite perform as well as the other films. It’s still made a ton – over $1.48 billion worldwide – but it didn’t reach the heights of The Way of Water ($2.3 billion) or the original Avatar which earned almost $2.9 billion. It makes you wonder where he’ll take the story next!

Okay, so the third movie didn’t make as much money as the others, but honestly, it still did incredibly well. I heard the budget was around $350 to $400 million, and it totally blew past that, making a ton of money worldwide. It was a success, even if it wasn’t the biggest one!

The director hinted at a possible fourth film in the series during a recent press conference at the Saturn Awards, telling reporters it was ‘likely,’ according to Screen Rant.

When a reporter asked Cameron if he’d consider revising the fourth installment after getting feedback on Fire and Ash, he replied with a definite, “Absolutely.”

Just to be clear, we haven’t decided to proceed yet. However, if we do – and it’s likely, though not certain – we’ll absolutely take into account what we learned from all three previous movies.

What to Read Next

So, Cameron was talking about the next Avatar movie, and he mentioned he really wants to explore Oona Chaplin’s character, Varang, more. She’s the leader of the Ash People Na’vi, and apparently, he feels like her story deserves a lot more screen time and development. I’m totally on board with that – she was awesome, and I want to see more of her and her clan!

He suggested that Varang, from Fire and Ash, could use some further development. She currently blends into the background with so many other characters and plot points, so making her more noticeable might be a good idea.

Honestly, it’s awesome to hear! It’s a great sign when people are really connecting with something, you know? It means it’s working, and that’s a good problem to have as a fan.

Viewers overwhelmingly loved Payakan in The Way of Water – he was the most popular character in the movie. I didn’t share that feedback with the actors at the time, but it led us to include him in Fire and Ash. It’s a process of learning and adapting as we move forward, and the story is constantly developing.
