Netflix released the excellent anime film Terminator Zero last year, but the Terminator franchise hasn’t been doing well overall. While Terminator: Dark Fate received better reviews than previous films, it didn’t make much money at the box office in 2019, and there are no current plans for another movie. However, the series isn’t completely finished – James Cameron, who directed and co-wrote the original two films, is working on a new Terminator movie. He’s recently revealed a significant detail about it, and I believe it’s exactly the fresh start this franchise needs to succeed.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has appeared in every Terminator film except one. Even in Terminator Salvation, a digital recreation of him was used as the T-800 who confronted John Connor and Kyle Reese. However, director James Cameron has revealed that Schwarzenegger won’t be involved in the newest Terminator movie, telling The Hollywood Reporter:
I’m confident he won’t be involved in future films. It’s time to introduce a fresh set of characters. I really pushed for Arnold to be in ‘Terminator: Dark Fate,’ and I think that film gave a fitting conclusion to his role as the T-800. Now, we need to explore the ‘Terminator’ universe in a bigger way, focusing on the concept of time travel and artificial intelligence. I’m eager to create something unexpected and original.

One of the writers of Terminator: Dark Fate shared a story about when they first worried the film wasn’t going to succeed – and it happened while they were playing pinball.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Pick For The Worst Terminator Movie Is So On Brand
It might seem odd to have a Terminator movie without Arnold Schwarzenegger – or at least, without seeing his face – but I think it’s a smart move. While I enjoyed Terminator: Dark Fate despite its problems, the series clearly needs a reboot. The original Terminator films are classics, but some aspects haven’t aged well. Dark Fate (currently streaming on Paramount+) tried to please both longtime fans, by bringing back Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, and attract new viewers, but ultimately it wasn’t successful.
It’s time for a fresh start with the Terminator franchise, which means a new cast. Linda Hamilton has stated she’s finished with the series, and Arnold Schwarzenegger likely wouldn’t be surprised to learn he won’t be in the next film. There’s still an audience for sci-fi stories about rebellious machines and humanity, but they need a new approach that reflects our current world, where artificial intelligence is becoming a reality. This new cast signals a clear break from the past and a move into completely new territory for the franchise.
It’s still uncertain whether James Cameron’s new Terminator movie will happen, or if he’ll even direct it himself. Hopefully, the project will gain traction in 2026, as this sci-fi series deserves a fresh start. If you’re a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic role as the T-800, the first two Terminator films are readily available on Netflix.
