Please be aware that the following contains spoilers for ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’. The film continues the story of Jake Sully and Neytiri as they work to keep their family and the world of Pandora safe. A key part of the plot involves the growing connection between their Na’vi daughter, Kiri, and their adopted human son, Spider, which leads to them sharing a kiss in the forest. This romantic moment between Sigourney Weaver, age 76, and Jack Champion, age 21, has raised concerns because Champion was only 15 years old during filming, which took place several years ago.
Cameron recently told The Hollywood Reporter about the kiss between Sigourney Weaver and Edie Falco and how they managed to film it while following strict intimacy guidelines. He revealed they used visual effects to create the kiss – it wasn’t actually Weaver and Falco kissing on screen. Instead, stand-ins performed the kiss to ensure the actors’ comfort and maintain professional boundaries.
To handle some sensitive scenes, we had Sigourney kiss one actor and Jack kiss another, before bringing them together to film the scene. They performed everything except the actual kiss. I felt a cheek kiss was acceptable for Sigourney, given the strict guidelines around intimate moments. It was one of the few times we had to slightly deviate from complete authenticity, but it was necessary to achieve the scene as planned.

Whether James Cameron continues his Avatar story depends on how well Avatar: Fire and Ash performs at the box office. He’s said that if the movies can’t be made, he’ll finish the story as novels. However, Sigourney Weaver is hoping the new film makes enough money to convince the studio to let him film the final two sequels, as she believes the whole story deserves to be told. She described Avatar 4 and 5 as fantastic and feels the saga should continue as a complete, interconnected narrative.
The new film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is off to a good start, earning over $345 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This shows there’s still strong interest in the Avatar sequels, although it didn’t quite match the massive $441.6 million debut of The Way of Water. To reach the same record-breaking success as the previous films, it needs to continue performing well in the weeks ahead, but early numbers prove audiences are still eager to see James Cameron’s blockbuster series.

If Avatar 4 happens, James Cameron has revealed the story will jump forward in time, showing the younger characters as adults and developing the relationship between Kiri and Spider. The next film will likely tackle more complex issues and explore challenging moral questions as the overall story moves towards its end. The latest Avatar movie also introduced a new villain who could become the main antagonist of the series, setting up a large-scale conflict.
