For over four decades, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been the face of the Terminator movies. While John Connor and James Cameron are important to the series, it’s Schwarzenegger’s role as the time-traveling cyborg, famous for lines like “I’ll be back,” that most people associate with the franchise, which began with a classic 1984 sci-fi film. But it appears the actor, who also served as governor, won’t be part of future Terminator projects.
I just read an interview with James Cameron where he revealed he’s making another Terminator film. I was surprised to find out the original star won’t be involved, but after thinking about it, I’m starting to feel hopeful, even if I’m not completely convinced yet. Let me explain…

Honestly, I Don’t Know If I Want (Or Need) More Terminator In The First Place
Look, I’m a huge Terminator fan – seriously, I even enjoy the ones that aren’t so great. I remember watching Terminator 2: Judgment Day with my brother when we were kids in the ’90s, and it totally blew my mind – it was actually the first Blu-ray I ever bought! And the original Terminator still genuinely scares me, it’s one of the most terrifying sci-fi films out there. I even had fun with Terminator: Dark Fate recently, even though it felt like I was the only one in the cinema!
Honestly, the Terminator franchise has explored every possible angle. We’ve seen good and bad Terminators, different versions of John and Sarah Connor throughout their lives, and traveled to every time period imaginable. I’m not sure where the story could go next, and I’m starting to wonder if it’s time to end the series.

This Could Breathe Some New Life Into The Franchise
I’m not giving up on the series entirely. I’m cautiously optimistic that removing Arnold Schwarzenegger and his character might actually be a good move. It could revitalize the franchise and give it a fresh start if they decide to continue it.
Everyone knows Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator is the face of the franchise and a major reason people watch. But introducing a new, compelling character – or characters – could really revitalize the series and prevent it from relying too much on the same old ideas. We’ve seen the Alien and Predator films successfully do this recently, and I think Terminator could benefit from the same approach. It might be a little jarring at first, but with a strong story, it could really work.

Maybe This Means We Could Put The Connor Saga Behind Us, As Well
With Arnold Schwarzenegger and his famous Terminator character seemingly finished, the new movie might be a chance to move the franchise beyond the story of Sarah Connor. Linda Hamilton has stated she’s finished playing the character after Terminator: Dark Fate, and it’s hoped that the filmmakers won’t revisit that storyline again.
We’ve explored every possible angle of the Connor family’s story over the years, and it’s time to let it go. Let’s not revisit it with new timelines, retellings, or reboots – it’s time to move on to fresh ideas. While Sarah’s character development and Hamilton’s acting were fantastic, some of the best in the genre, recent installments have simply lost their impact.
As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always been invested in the Skywalker saga, but I think Star Wars has proven something really interesting: you don’t need to center every story around that one family to have success. It might take a little getting used to for some of us, but I honestly believe it opens up a lot of exciting possibilities for the future of the franchise.

I Know It’s Different, But The Alien Franchise Has Had Some Great Moments Without Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley
I’m also not dismissing the possibility of a new Terminator movie because, like Star Wars and Alien, the franchise can clearly continue even without its original star. While I’d love to have seen director Neill Blomkamp’s plans for Ripley (before they were cancelled), the Alien series has actually been doing well recently, even without Sigourney Weaver’s iconic character.
I wasn’t thrilled with Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but I really enjoyed the recent Alien: Romulus in 2024 and the 2025 TV series Alien: Earth. Both expanded the Alien universe in great ways. I’m hoping we could see something similar happen with the Terminator franchise – a fresh start with new stories. But it’s possible I’m just being optimistic.

If Arnold Doesn’t Come Back, They Better Not Pull A Terminator: Salvation
If they ever make another Terminator movie without Arnold Schwarzenegger, I really hope they avoid repeating the mistakes of Terminator Salvation. That 2009 film featured a really strange and frankly bad computer-generated version of the T-800 – it just didn’t work!
It wasn’t just visually unappealing – the technology simply wasn’t good enough, and probably never will be. It was so distracting that I couldn’t shake the image. If we want to create something better than the T-800, let’s start fresh and avoid trying to combine old and new ideas. Let’s commit to a completely new direction.
I’ll likely watch any new Terminator films that come out, no matter what. But I’m really hoping this one is decent and doesn’t turn out like Terminator: Genisys.
