James Cameron explains Avatar 3’s ominous title
As a gamer with a soft spot for epic cinematic adventures, I can hardly contain my excitement for James Cameron‘s “Avatar: Fire and Ash”. Having grown up on the original trilogy of Star Wars, I’ve always been drawn to tales that seamlessly blend action, emotion, and profound themes.
James Cameron has explained the reasoning behind Avatar 3‘s ominous title.
Next year at Christmas in 2025, the sequel to last year’s “The Way of Water” is scheduled to be released. This new film will be set amidst the volatile landscapes of Pandora, where Jake Sully and his kin discover that the Na’vi residing there are notably hostile.
Over the past weekend, Cameron performed alongside Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña during Disney’s D23 Expo. They unveiled that the third film in the series will be titled “Avatar: Flames and Ashes“.
Earlier, the franchise’s former producer Jon Landau hinted at a literal interpretation of the movie’s name. He referred to it as a “vigorous, volcanic species.”
When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cameron revealed the symbolic significance behind the movie’s title. He mentioned that he put considerable thought into selecting a name that would echo the themes presented in the film.
He implied that discussing the movie in depth might not be possible until one has watched it to understand its meaning. However, if you consider fire as representing feelings such as hatred, anger, or violence, then ash could symbolize the aftermath or consequences of these intense emotions.
“What happens next? Well, it’s often sorrow and loss, isn’t it? And this, in turn, can lead to increased violence, rage, and hostility in the future. It becomes a destructive loop. That’s the general thinking.”
Cameron subsequently disclosed that “Fire and Ash” ventures into more ominous realms compared to its predecessors. However, he emphasized that it retains the essence of being a wide-open, magnificent, and grand journey – an aspect that they always strive for in their creative endeavors.
The news comes after the director previously revealed that Fire and Ash will introduce “two completely new cultures”, as well as the narrator changing from Jake to his teenage son Lo’ak.
The upcoming third part in the sequence is modeled after the blockbuster success of “The Way of Water.” This subsequent film amassed an impressive earnings of over $2.3 billion at worldwide box offices, positioning it as the third highest-grossing motion picture ever made.
Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water are streaming now on Disney+.
