I just read that James Cameron actually spoke up about the ending of A House of Dynamite, and he’s totally backing up his ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow, and the choices she made as the director. It’s cool to see him supporting her artistic vision like that!
The political thriller became a popular hit on Netflix shortly after its release in October, quickly reaching the number one spot.
Okay, so this new movie stars Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, and Gabriel Basso, and the setup is crazy. Basically, a single missile hits Chicago, and we see everything unfold through the eyes of three different people – including the President, who Idris Elba plays. It’s all about how everyone reacts to this massive crisis.
What to Read Next
Instead of providing a clear resolution, the movie ends on a cliffhanger, leaving the audience wondering what happens next and with many unanswered questions.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron revealed he recently spoke with Bigelow and firmly stood by the film’s ending, telling her, “I utterly defend that ending.”

Cameron explained that the story’s conclusion is the only logical one. He pointed out that in the classic tale, The Lady or the Tiger?, the reader never finds out what lies behind either door.
That’s not the main issue, though. The real problem is that as soon as the missile launched and was detected – right from the very beginning – the situation was already hopeless.
Cameron had criticized the ending of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, saying it avoided fully confronting the consequences of the atomic bomb by not showing the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Cameron explained the ending of A House of Dynamite by saying there wasn’t a happy resolution, and the film deliberately showed that no good outcome was possible. He emphasized that the movie’s message is that these weapons shouldn’t exist.

Ultimately, the power to authorize a nuclear attack – whether to start one or respond to one – rests with a single person: the U.S. president. Considering the immense global impact of that decision, it’s a crucial thing to keep in mind when we vote.
The director explained that the film’s ending was unavoidable, echoing the famous line from War Games: ‘The only way to win is not to play.’
A House of Dynamite is available to watch now on Netflix.
