Avatar 4‘s future just got a major update.
James Cameron has discussed the strong possibility of making Avatar 4, and hinted at a significant role expansion for a popular character. The success of Avatar: Fire and Ash is crucial for the development of the two sequels Cameron has planned. Ultimately, how well the third movie performs at the box office will largely decide the future of the Avatar series.
At the Saturn Awards, Cameron told reporters – including ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender – that he’s confident Avatar 4 will happen. He also shared that they’re developing a more extensive backstory for the character Varang, addressing some issues with how she was presented in the earlier film.
Check out what Cameron had to say below:
You mentioned you adjusted ‘Fire and Ash’ based on feedback from ‘Way of Water.’ Now that ‘Fire and Ash’ has been released in theaters, are you considering any further changes for future installments?
James Cameron says they haven’t officially decided to make another film yet, but it’s probable. If they do move forward, they will absolutely use what they learned from the previous three movies to improve the new one.
We should probably develop Varang’s role a bit more as we continue with ‘From Fire and Ash.’ Right now, she blends into the background with so many other characters and storylines. We need to make her stand out more.
It’s actually a great sign when fans really connect with something! With The Way of Water, Payakan was a huge hit – he was consistently the most popular character, according to what I’ve seen. I didn’t share that with the actors at the time, but it definitely made me think, ‘Okay, we have to include Payakan in the next story!’ It’s all part of the process, you know? Things change and grow as you go, and you learn what really resonates with people.
Director James Cameron explained that Varang’s role will be expanded in the upcoming movie, similar to how Payakan became more important in Avatar: The Way of Water. Payakan wasn’t initially meant to be a major character in that film, but audiences loved him, so the filmmakers decided to give him a bigger part.
The fate of Varang after the climactic battle in Avatar: Fire and Ash is uncertain, as she vanishes from sight. However, her continued presence suggests she’ll be a key player in the next story. The extent of her involvement is still a mystery.
Cameron’s recent statements are encouraging for the future of the Avatar films. While the third movie earned $1.482 billion at the box office despite a $350-400 million budget – making it a significant success globally – it seems highly probable that Avatar 4 will be released in December 2029 as planned.
Varang’s return will likely explore his complex relationship with Quaritch, as the two characters seem connected. They might team up again after the last movie, this time to create a new plan against the Sully family, possibly in a different setting. However, it’s still unknown if the story will go that way.
Currently, Cameron appears to have solid plans for Avatar 4, which is a good sign for the future of the series. With so many important characters now in the films, Varang has a chance to appear in more scenes and interact with both the heroes and villains.
Avatar 4 is expected to be released in theaters on December 21, 2029.
