James Brolin Reveals the Secret to His 30-Year Marriage with Barbra Streisand

They belong to an uncommon circle of celebrities who have managed to overcome the notorious Hollywood marriage pitfall, as they have been together for close to three decades.

Now, James Brolin, who’s married to Barbra Streisand, shares insights on what keeps their relationship strong for so many years.

Streisand, 82, and Brolin, 84, tied the knot in 1998 two years after being setup on a blind date.

During a recent interview on the Today show, the actor from Westworld attributed a vital household object to the endurance of their marriage.

As I shared on Tuesday, one of the wisest decisions we’ve ever made is investing in a top-notch mattress. Now, let me clarify: my partner and I are not early risers – quite the opposite, actually. But you see, we truly cherish our extended sleep hours, and investing in a comfortable mattress has significantly enhanced that experience for us.

‘We do a lot of our work on the phone, on paper, reading, right next to each other.’ 

Brolin also said that he and Streisand’s frequent walks together have helped keep them bonded.

Brolin advises that we both should learn to go for walks together. He suggests saying something like, “Alright, let’s take a deep breath and let’s go for a walk.” This is his recommendation based on what he shared with the Today hosts.

Since animals also engage in similar behaviors, it’s fair to say that they exhibit reciprocal actions towards one another, much like humans.

This isn’t the first time that Brolin has spoke on his and Streisand’s 30-year romance.

Back in 2022, he told PEOPLE that ‘patience’ is key to a successful marriage. 

According to Brolin, it’s important for everyone to develop their negotiation skills. This involves being patient and knowing when to step away from a situation.

In July 1996, Brolin and Streisand met for the first time following a setup arranged by their common friends at a gathering over dinner.

Streisand recounted her and Brolin’s first date during a candid interview with W Magazine in 2016. 

As a devoted follower, let me share an amusing incident: At a gathering, I encountered someone whom I assumed would be a rugged mountain man with a beard. To my surprise, he had shaved off his hair completely! Intrigued, I couldn’t help but ask, “Who was responsible for this drastic change in your appearance?

Streisand said that that was the moment that Brolin fell in love with her. 

Later on, he confided in me that it was then when he developed feelings for me. It’s uncommon, but my award-winning partner prefers honesty about such matters.

She admitted during an appearance on The Tonight Show in 2021 that she was ‘so shy’ to meet Brolin.

She mentioned to Jimmy Fallon that they arranged a blind date for her, and she felt so timid that she entered the house and spent time with the kids in the playroom, avoiding the dinner table until it was time to join.

For the first time, the pair stepped out in public as a duo in November 1996, followed by strolling the red carpet side by side at the 69th Academy Awards in March 1997.

On July 1, 1998, Streisand and Brolin exchanged wedding vows in the garden of their Los Angeles residence, as reported by PEOPLE.

It was nothing short of a celestial gathering in Tinseltown itself, boasting the presence of luminaries like Tom Hanks and his lovely wife Rita Wilson, screen legends such as Marlon Brando, musical maestro Quincy Jones, and the dynamic duo, John Travolta and Kelly Preston. Simply awe-inspiring!

In their 50s, both Brolin and Streisand had previously been married more than once before they found love in each other again.

In 1966, 12 days after their initial meeting, Brolin got married for the first time to Jane Cameron Agee.

Back in the day, I was beyond thrilled when that beloved duo brought two little bundles of joy into the world – none other than Josh Brolin, aged 57, and his brother Jess, both turning 53. Unfortunately, their marriage didn’t last, as they parted ways in 1984.

Sadly, Jane passed away in a car accident on February 14, 1995 – just one day following the celebration of her son’s 27th birthday.

Brolin then tied the knot with Jan Smithers in 1986, after meeting on the set of Batman.

The pair welcomed a daughter Molly, 38, and Jan later filed for divorce in 1995.

His third marriage was to Barbra and took place on July 1, 1998.

In 1963, Barbra tied the knot with Elliott Gould, who played in The Long Goodbye. They had a son named Jason Gould together. However, their marriage ended in 1971 through a divorce.
