James Bond frontrunner replaces The Bear star in “sweeping” Netflix drama

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, a leading contender to be the next James Bond and recently starring in 28 Years Later, will be the main actor in a new romantic drama called Enigma Variations. Netflix has acquired the film.

This series is adapted from a novel by André Aciman, the author of Call Me By Your Name. It’s produced by Media Res, the company behind The Morning Show.

Taylor-Johnson will take over the role previously intended for Jeremy Allen White, who exited the project late last year.

According to Netflix’s news site, Tudum, the new show centers on Paul, a man whose life is dramatically changed by the relationships he has over a decade.

This film offers a deeply personal and broad look at what it means to be a man, explore one’s sexuality, and navigate love today. It explores the idea that with so many options, it can be hard to know when you’ve truly found the right person.

For years, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been a popular choice in discussions about who will play the next James Bond. In 2024, he was asked if he found it tiring to constantly be questioned about the possibility.

After taking a moment and sighing, he told Associated Press: “You sick of asking the question?”

The reporter started to say, “I’d like to ask… but never mind.” Taylor-Johnson then began walking away, saying, “Okay, have a good day.”

The script for the next James Bond film is being written by Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders. He recently shared that he’s really enjoying working on it before filming begins.

He shared with BBC Radio 4’s Today program that he’s thoroughly enjoying his work on the Bond project, but couldn’t reveal any specifics.

I absolutely love the James Bond books! I think they’re seriously underrated as proper literature. What really gets me is the world Fleming builds – it feels so incredibly real, but it’s obviously not, almost like a vivid dream. Plus, his writing style is just fantastic, and the dialogue is so sharp and clever. It’s just a really immersive experience.

Award-winning director Denis Villeneuve will be directing the next James Bond film, which is currently known as the 26th installment in the series. Details about the movie haven’t been released yet.
