James Blunt reveals famous song he wrote about ‘being high as a kite on drugs’ and ‘stalking someone’s girlfriend’ bought him a house as he celebrates 20th anniversary

On Instagram, James Blunt shared that the enduring popularity of his hit single “You’re Beautiful” allowed him to purchase a home in Ibiza, marking the 20th anniversary of its release on Friday.

2005 saw the release of a track that catapulted the artist, aged 51 at the time, into prominence. The song gained worldwide popularity due to its infectious tune. However, he humorously commented about the lyrics, which depict being under the influence of drugs and stalking someone’s girlfriend.

I hopped on Instagram to amuse my followers by posting a funny video, expressing gratitude for their tremendous support that helped make the song a massive success.

In the fresh video, we observe James strolling into a spacious lounge, subsequently moving toward the recording device with the well-known tune resonating in the backdrop.

He said: ’20 years ago today, I put out this song that bought me this house.

He added: ‘Isn’t it surprising? A tune about feeling intoxicated by drugs and secretly monitoring another person’s girlfriend seems to strike a chord with you all so deeply. Truly, you are remarkable.’

Your humor is simply wonderful, James (laughing emoji), can’t believe it’s 20 years already!”; “You’re a genius (laughing emojis)!”; “I’m smitten by you (laughing emoji) – your wit never fails to impress.”)

In response to Poppy Delevingne’s laughter, Hugo Taylor remarked, “That’s quite a legendary moment.” Meanwhile, he also noted, “The house is quite pleasant.

In 2006, after the achievement of his top-charting single, James purchased a £1.7 million property in Ibiza.

Perched atop a lush pine forest lies a property boasting six bedrooms, a cozy library, a spacious sun terrace, and an outdoor pool complete with its own pool house.

You’re Beautiful has undoubtedly been one of the most adored love songs of the past 20 years.

However, the inspiration behind the enduring tune could be described as slightly creepy.

Back in 2022, I graced the stage of The John Bishop Show and spilled the beans about a cherished melody that many consider a symbol of romance. However, as it turns out, its origins aren’t quite as lovey-dovey as some might assume.

When queried about the motivation behind his composition, he admitted: “The song is a reflection of my past experience of secretly observing someone else’s girlfriend on the subway while under the influence.

James then jokingly added: ‘But people play it at their weddings, which is nice.’

Following its debut, “You’re Beautiful” catapulted James into global fame and the song peaked at the top spot in the UK, Canada, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, and Italy.

Years past, I found myself featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where I openly shared my interpretation of the song – it was, as I saw it, a tribute to an erstwhile love interest.

He told Oprah: ‘It’s kind of miserable.

I stumbled upon my former girlfriend, accompanied by a stranger, whom I had never met before, on the London Tube.

In that brief instant when our gazes met, it felt like we experienced an entire lifetime together – yet we took no action and have not crossed paths since.
