Jake Paul Beats 58-year-old Mike Tyson as the Hits Don’t Match the Hype

As a seasoned cinephile who’s seen more boxing matches than Rocky Balboa himself, I must admit that the Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul spectacle left me feeling like I was watching a remake of “Rocky V” – not quite up to par with the franchise’s earlier installments.

As the crowd called for more, Jake Paul removed his gloves prior to the last round and respectfully gestured towards the 58-year-old Mike Tyson.

On Friday night, honoring a legendary figure from the world of boxing failed to create much enthusiasm among the spectators who packed the stadium of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.

As a passionate moviegoer, I’d rephrase it like this: In my book, I won a hard-fought eight-round battle against Tyson, where the actual blows didn’t live up to the anticipation built around our matchup. This was an exciting encounter between me, a 27-year-old who transitioned from YouTube stardom to professional boxing, and the legendary former heavyweight champion, stepping back into the ring after nearly two decades.

All the hate from the pre-fight buildup was gone, replaced by boos from bewildered fans hoping for more from a fight that drew plenty of questions about its legitimacy long beforehand.

In this contest, the judges’ scores clearly favored Paul, with one score of 80-72 in his favor and the other two scores being 79-73.

Paul praised Mike in the arena, but the audience wasn’t very responsive as they were already leaving before the outcome was declared. He stated that Mike is the best at what he does, and Paul admires and finds inspiration from him.

After the initial ring, Tyson swiftly followed Paul and threw a few rapid-fire punches, yet he didn’t attempt many more attacks for the remainder of the bout.

Fewer than usual rounds (10 or 12), shorter two-minute intervals instead of three, and heavier gloves meant to reduce punch force didn’t seem to spark much activity in the fight.

After Tyson’s swift attack at the start, Paul became noticeably more assertive, yet his punches didn’t deliver much impact. There were several instances where his blows missed their mark or lacked precision.

Paul explained, “I aimed to give him a small jab, so to speak,” as he boosted his record to an impressive 11-1. “I was worried he might harm me first. I retaliated with a jab, did the best I could. I truly gave it my all.

Tyson generally stayed put, allowing Paul to approach him, with only a few instances being different. This was quite a contrast compared to the co-main event, where Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano engaged in another intense fight for the undisputed super lightweight title. Despite Taylor’s victory, there were questions about the decision once more.

Paul mentioned that he began to relax a bit around the third round, assuming that Tyson was exhausted and open to attack.

Paul expressed, ‘I aimed to deliver an entertaining performance, yet I didn’t wish to cause harm to someone who didn’t require it.’

As a passionate moviegoer of boxing, I must say it had been over a decade since I last witnessed Tyson stepping into the ring for an official fight back in 2005. However, his exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020 was nothing short of captivating entertainment! Speaking of newcomers, Paul has only been throwing punches for about four years now, but I’m eager to see what he brings into the ring next.

In response to being asked about the significance of finishing the fight, Tyson stated, “I didn’t show anyone anything, only proved it to myself.” He is not someone who strives to satisfy the world. Instead, he’s content with his own abilities.

Originally slated for July 20, the fight had to be moved due to Tyson’s hospitalization following a stomach ulcer diagnosis after he fell sick during a flight. Currently, his tally stands at 50 wins and 7 losses, with 44 of those victories coming via knockout.

The day prior to their scheduled fight, Tyson struck Paul in the face during the weigh-in, and they hurled insults at each other at various promotional events leading up to the match, both before and following its postponement. This interaction took place verbally and physically.

The hate was long gone by the end of the anticlimactic fight.

Paul stated, ‘I hold him in such high regard.’ He confessed that following his altercation with him, where he hit Paul, he felt an urge to retaliate and escalate the situation violently. However, as time passed during their confrontations, these aggressive feelings subsided.

The battle established a new Texas record for combat sports, pulling in approximately $18 million at the gate as reported by organizers. However, during its initial live combat sports event on Netflix, there were issues with the broadcast feed. With over 280 million subscribers worldwide, Netflix is a global streaming giant.

“This is the biggest event,” Paul said. “Over 120 million people on Netflix. We crashed the site.”

Notable personalities such as retired NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, ex-NFL player Rob Gronkowski, and Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jerry Jones were also present.

In simpler terms, during Tyson’s era, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis, who were his adversaries, paid a visit to him in his dressing room prior to the match.

In the 1997 fight against Holyfield, Tyson notoriously took a bite out of his opponent’s ear. Moreover, it seemed like he held his glove in his mouth occasionally during the match against Paul. When asked about any issues with his mouthpiece, he was questioned.

“I have a habit of biting my gloves,” Tyson said. “I have a biting fixation.”

“I’ve heard about that,” the interview responded.

In an undercard match, Mario Barrios managed to keep his WBC welterweight crown undefeated following a draw with Abel Ramos. Initially, Barrios held the upper hand, but Ramos gained momentum and ruled the middle rounds. Both fighters scored a knockdown during their 12-round battle.

For the first time since becoming the WBC welterweight champion at age 29, Barrios encountered a fight. This confrontation marked Terence Crawford’s initial steps in transitioning from the 147-pound weight class.

29-year-old Barrios clinched the temporary WBC championship last year through a unanimous decision against Yordenis Ugas. Meanwhile, Ramos, aged 33, holds a record of 28 wins, 6 losses, and 3 draws.
