Jade Thirlwall ‘Sold Her Soul’ for Fame

Jade Thirlwall has admitted that she feels like she made a deal with the devil for fame, criticizing Simon Cowell and likening herself to a Marvel superhero following the success of Little Mix.

32-year-old vocalist attained widespread recognition in 2011 as a contestant on The X-Factor, ultimately forming the band Little Mix with members Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock.

Working under the leadership of Simon, the team triumphed in the prestigious singing contest and subsequently produced massive hits like Wings, Black Magic, and Shout Out To My Ex over a ten-year period.

She expressed that she believed she had made a deal or compromise, as she entered the industry at a relatively early stage in her life.

In the forthcoming broadcast of BBC’s The Assembly, where the interviewer is neurodivergent, she was posed a question about whether she perceived herself as having made a deal or compromise that could be seen as giving up something important to her.

She responded: ‘I was outmaneuvered by you, although it might have been slightly more even at first. Back then, I was relatively inexperienced and quickly agreed without fully considering.’

‘But as the years have gone by I’ve learned more and more about the industry.

Over time, much like how Thanos has gathered the Infinity Stones, I have been recovering fragments of my own soul. This has happened as I’ve experienced greater creative autonomy.

As a devoted admirer, I too share doubts about the departure of music impresario Simon Cowell, known for his creation of The X Factor and the Got Talent series, from the spotlight.

She expressed her opinion that a certain type of television program or record label might be coming to an end, suggesting the closure of that particular era. However, she is uncertain whether Simon Cowell personally brought about this change.

Previously, it had been implied that the line “I sold my soul to a psycho” from her song “Angel of my Dreams” might have been a jab at Simon. However, during an interview, Jade clarified that this wasn’t always the definitive meaning behind those words.

She shared with Beat Magazine, “The song isn’t directly related to a specific event. However, I aimed for it to encapsulate my personal journey in the music industry, from my initial entry up until now. Consequently, the song carries a sense of chaos that mirrors this experience.

The beginning is akin to the uplifting tune during the segment on ‘The X Factor’ when one wins, instantly propelling them into showbiz.

She stated: “I prefer not to spend time criticizing the past 13 years of my existence here. I’m quite pleased and satisfied. However, much like any occupation, there have been moments of joy and difficulty.

‘That’s just life, and it’s my reality, but it’s about writing it in a way that’s not woe is me.’

After sharing her thoughts about Little Mix’s break and starting her solo journey, she later acknowledged that it required some time for her to adjust to working independently. This confession followed suit.

Last summer marked the beginning of her independent musical journey as she released her first single, titled “Angel of My Dreams.” This song climbed to the top 10 positions in the United Kingdom and has since earned her the title of Best Pop Act at this year’s BRIT Awards.

At the moment, Jade is busy with the creation of her initial solo album, as she and Little Mix declared a break in 2022.

Although she achieved great success, Jade confessed in her food-focused podcast, “Dish from Waitrose,” that it took effort for her to learn to be self-reliant and, for the first time, enjoy the freedom of making her own choices.

When chatting with Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, she confessed that initially, she didn’t experience a feeling of liberation following the band’s separation, as she had cherished her time in the group, making it seem like ending a long-term relationship unexpectedly.

Jade openly admitted that, due to being accustomed to having decisions made for her, she needed time to adjust to living independently.

Reflecting on it now, our final performance in 2022 left an indelible mark. That very evening, after the show, I found myself back at my humble abode. The next dawn broke with a peculiar emptiness – for the first time in over a decade, my diary was devoid of any scheduled engagements.

Instead of following a predetermined path for many years, my life unexpectedly took on a spiraling trajectory.

Given how accustomed I had become to living that way, and how deeply ingrained it was for me to follow orders and schedules, it felt quite natural.

Isn’t it challenging, though, since when you cherish something deeply, as in our case, it wasn’t because we detested one another. Instead, we agreed to pause our relationship during its peak moments. Things were going exceptionally well for us. Our affection for each other remained unwavering.

It seemed like the perfect moment for action. However, it felt as if we had been in a partnership that suddenly ended without warning – we were no longer connected.

After finding myself alone, I needed time to adapt, asking questions such as, “What should I pursue now? What kind of music do I prefer? Who am I when I’m independent?

In my journey, I found myself embracing a newfound sense of liberation as I started selecting my team and penning songs from my own life’s tapestry. Jade’s words resonated deeply with me, as they mirrored my very own experiences.
