In an effort to inspire other women, Jackie ‘O’ Henderson chose to have a live, on-air breast exam as part of her campaign for regular self-examination to detect potential signs of breast cancer.
On Thursday, I participated in a breast cancer awareness campaign during the Kyle and Jackie O Show, following my radio colleague Ali Clarke’s disclosure of her personal cancer battle.
Eagerly stepping up for all my fellow fans, Jackie, aged 49, daringly allowed a live breast examination on air, with a medical professional joining us in the studio to offer reassurance and check for any potential signs or symptoms, right alongside me.
Video from the health assessment demonstrates the healthcare provider performing the examination hidden beneath her sweater. She clarified that she was checking for any signs of alterations within the breast tissue, including potential lumps or bumps.
Following the examination, Jackie appeared noticeably relaxed when the doctor shared the good news that she was healthy. Her peers offered their congratulations and encouragement with a well-deserved “well done.”
KIIS Network’s latest initiative, #KIISBreastCheckDay, encourages listeners to remember examining their breasts monthly, with the catchphrase ‘Have you checked yours recently?’ as part of this campaign.

The campaign aims to normalise and promote regular self-exams as a crucial health habit and was inspired by radio host Ali Clarke speaking out about her breast cancer diagnosis.
After the announcement, it’s said that BreastScreen SA experienced one of its busiest days for booking appointments, with a total of 779 women arranging breast screenings.

A week ago, morning radio host Ali from Adelaide became emotional as she shared that she’d received a cancer diagnosis during her show, Max & Ali in the Morning.
Stunned were the listeners as she disclosed her intention to step away from the radio temporarily, due to her ongoing treatment for breast cancer.
She expressed that the growth appeared tiny and controllable at first, but upon examination, several small cancerous spots were discovered. This discovery means she will undergo major surgery later this week, requiring time off for recovery, as one can expect.
As a woman who has always valued practicality over fashion trends, I have never been one to dress provocatively or show off my body. Growing up, I was an active child and my breasts often seemed like more of a hindrance than a part of me when it came to playing sports. They were functional, but they certainly didn’t make it any easier to run around and play as a kid. My life experiences have taught me the importance of being comfortable and practical in all aspects of my life, and this carries over into how I dress as well.
The radio host broke down in tears as she emotionally opened up about ‘losing a part’ of herself.
“She mentioned that she’s struggled internally, torn between feeling upset with herself for almost taking pride in the fact that she lost a piece of herself,” is one possible paraphrase.
However, when I take a step back and attempt to rationalize it, I find myself on the verge of relinquishing a piece of myself that society has always defined as feminine and essential, while another part of my mind understands that this change is crucial for my well-being.
As a lifestyle expert, I find myself in a peculiar position of gratitude, even amidst challenging circumstances. Receiving my recent medical diagnosis was undeniably devastating, but I can’t help but feel incredibly fortunate with the exceptional care I’ve been receiving thus far. The quality of healthcare providers and facilities at my disposal is nothing short of remarkable, making me realize just how ‘darn lucky’ I am to be in this position.
On Tuesday morning, Ali phoned into the radio program to disclose that she had undergone a procedure known as a mastectomy, which is the surgical removal of the whole breast and surrounding tissue.
In my own words, I was overjoyed when the doctor told me everything had gone exceptionally well during the procedure. To my delight, this means I’m back home now.
Ali, a mother of three, mentioned that the operation lasted for numerous hours, and she must now await the test results to determine if additional treatment is necessary.
“I felt greatly relieved when Eloise, Samuel, and Madeline entered, and when I invited them to take a peek, they agreed without hesitation and showed no sign of discomfort.”
Ali shares her three beloved children with her husband, ALFW Adelaide Crows Coach Matthew Clarke.
