Jackie ‘O’ Henderson appeared to have been struggling with the decision to leave her $100 million KIIS FM deal for a while now.
Listeners of The Kyle & Jackie O Show were surprised on Tuesday to learn that Tess Henderson’s employment had been ended. This followed her telling management she could no longer work with Kyle Sandilands after he made critical remarks on the show last month which upset her greatly.
Last March, at a major audio industry conference in Athens, Greece, 51-year-old Henderson stated she was prepared to leave the show if necessary.
In a recent interview with John Simons on British radio, Henderson revealed she’d consider ending her highly profitable 10-year contract, worth $100 million.
In the video, John pointed out that you had previously stated you’d be willing to leave the show – and end your 10-year contract – if you weren’t happy with how things were going.
‘Yes I would,’ Henderson replied succinctly.
As you get older, it’s really important to stay true to who you are and make sure you’re enjoying your life and doing things that feel genuine.
Continuing, Henderson said that her career had never been defined by money.
She explained that once she stops enjoying her work, she doesn’t want to be held to the terms of her current contract, especially if it feels like she’s only motivated by financial gain. She emphasized that money has never been her primary career driver, and she wants to keep it that way.
‘So, if it doesn’t feel right, at any stage, I would be prepared to walk away from that.’
It was a sentiment that Henderson shared on air, just four months later.
She announced in July that she would be leaving her radio job, following Kyle Sandilands’s announcement that he wanted to move to a castle in France.
She said her plan is to move to Italy after ten years and spend six months of each year living there.
After Sandilands asked Henderson if he planned to leave after his ten-year contract ended, Henderson simply replied, “Yes.”
In an October interview with T Australia, Henderson unintentionally hinted at her ongoing disagreement with Sandilands.
Lately, Kyle and I haven’t always seen eye-to-eye, so I won’t hesitate to share my opinion if I disagree with him, she said.
KIIS FM’s owner, Australian Radio Network (ARN), announced on Tuesday that Kyle Henderson’s $100 million contract was cancelled. Additionally, Karl Sandilands was suspended and given two weeks to fix whatever caused the issue, or he will also be fired.
ARN sent a written notice to Sandilands, informing him that his actions on the February 20th show were considered a serious violation of the agreement between ARN and Quasar Media.
The KIIS FM breakfast show is ending right away, and temporary plans are being put in place to fill its time slot.
ARN has offered Henderson the possibility of an alternative show on the network.
In 2023, Sandilands and Henderson agreed to a 10-year contract with ARN, with eight years remaining on the deal.
As a lifestyle expert, I always say knowing your worth is key! In a really groundbreaking deal, they walked away with around $200 million – and that breaks down to about $47,000 for each episode they filmed. It’s a fantastic example of successful negotiation and understanding their value in the industry.
Henderson hadn’t been on The Kyle & Jackie O Show since February 20th, after Karl Sandilands said she wasn’t concentrating enough at work.
While arguing on live television, Henderson became emotional and started crying when the conversation turned to Prince Andrew.
Sandilands became angry with her when she proceeded to read out the disgraced royal’s birth chart.
He lambasted his co-star, claiming that her love for astrology was affecting her work.
When Henderson tried to protect herself and told him he was attacking her, he claimed he was simply stating what he believed to be true.
An emotional Henderson said she was deeply ‘offended’ by his brutal comments during the clash.
She took time off work after the disagreement and was scheduled to be back on the show on March 2nd.
On Monday, it was announced that her return to the airwaves had been pushed back another week.
On Tuesday’s show, Sandilands announced that Henderson would eventually be back on the air, but that didn’t happen as planned.
