As a seasoned investigator with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that this case is one for the history books. The cunningness and audacity of the accused in this heinous crime have left me utterly astounded.

Jackie ‘O’ Henderson found herself moved to tears during an intensely emotional discussion with the heart-stricken mother of the young boy who had been burned by hot coffee.

In the past few days, Australians are deeply saddened as nine-month-old baby Luka endured critical burn injuries due to an unprovoked attack involving hot coffee.

On the 27th of August, Luka and his mom were enjoying a picnic at Hanlon Park, located in inner south east Brisbane. Suddenly, an individual claimed to have poured boiling coffee from a thermos onto the baby, then quickly left the country.

Luka suffered serious burns to his face, upper body and arms and has undergone five operations in Queensland Children’s Hospital including a synthetic skin graft.

On Friday morning, the Kyle and Jackie O Show hosted a conversation with an unnamed woman, who is grieving over her son Luka, following the tragic incident that took place.

Jackie, aged 49, fought back tears as she listened to the heartfelt speech from the mother concerning her son, labeling the incident as a heinous act.

Overwhelmed with emotion, I choked out to her, “I can barely fathom such wickedness, and poor Bubba… it’s just heart-wrenching.

She said, “He’s such an innocuous young boy, who hasn’t harmed anyone, that it leaves you feeling incredibly upset,” she continued, struggling to keep her emotions in check.

Alongside his co-host, Kyle Sandilands, expressed his sorrow as he confessed that he cried profusely upon learning about Luka’s severe injuries from the news reports.

As a new dad myself, sharing the joy and challenges of parenthood with my little one, Otto (age 2), I felt compelled to express my empathy towards fellow parents who are going through a difficult time. I can only imagine the heartbreak of a first-time mom experiencing such distress.

As a passionate admirer, I can honestly confess that I was moved to tears in my living room upon witnessing the tale unfold on the screen. Everyone recognizes it wasn’t exactly top-notch content, but with my own little one scampering about while I was shedding tears over the news, the emotional impact was undeniable.

Kyle and Jackie pledged to contribute $10,000 to Luka’s hospital treatment GoFundMe campaign, bringing the total donations up to $160,000 so far.

Initially aiming for only $5,000, the mother expressed her astonishment at the community’s generosity: “I find it hard to believe! The warmth in my heart from everyone’s kindness, the messages… it truly lightens the process.

Afterward, she recounted the harrowing events of the unexpected assault, acknowledging that it’s hard not to contemplate the suffering inflicted on her innocent child.

Coming home from the hospital, seeing him wrapped up in bandages and enduring so much, really doesn’t seem fair. This incident keeps playing on my mind, remembering the amount of pain he must have been in,” she confided.

‘I’m a first-time mum and [it’s] taken that part away from me,’ she emotionally added.

She called the assault itself “terrifying” and mentioned that her wounded son’s screams were audible from afar as she recounted the distressing event.

She described an incident where someone approached her from a position slightly to her side and behind, and then her son was seated directly opposite her. This individual moved closer and splashed some substance onto him, she disclosed.

It was clear to me that it was an aggressive act based on how he hurled the object and his subsequent actions of glancing and fleeing. As my friend tried to pursue him, they started shouting. I didn’t understand it was a hot substance until I got near to console them, and their skin was already peeling off.

She stated that it was both terrifying and disorganized, and the screams were audible even from several streets distant. Moreover, she and her son also heard them.

The mother explained that Luka has had five operations so far, and it’s possible he may require a skin transplant on his thigh to heal the severe burns inflicted by the hot coffee incident.

She mentioned that Luka might bear some lasting scars as a result of the terrible assault, however, she also indicated that medical professionals can utilize laser therapy and skin needling techniques to manage the burns.

She noted that it was more accurate to say he’s young and thus unlikely to recall these events, rather than attributing it to luck. As he matures, her hope is that the scars on his skin will gradually diminish in size over time.

Police in Queensland have recognized a foreign individual who is suspected of pouring hot coffee on an infant. However, this person has left the country after the incident.

On August 28, a 33-year-old individual was in New South Wales. Exactly twelve hours prior to the confirmation of his identity by the police, he departed Sydney Airport on August 31 using his personal passport.

In my professional expertise, I must share that an arrest warrant has been issued against someone due to alleged charges of inflicting serious physical injury. This offense, if proven, could potentially result in imprisonment for the rest of their life. It’s a stark reminder of the gravity and consequences of causing harm to others.

Detective Inspector Paul Dalton, referring to the event as a brutal, seemingly unprovoked assault, stated that the suspect exhibited knowledge about law enforcement strategies and was engaged in covert monitoring efforts.

On Monday, he stated that this investigation – one of the intricate and occasionally exasperating ones I’ve dealt with – is one he’s currently handling.

DI Dalton mentioned that the man appeared to understand our (the police) methods for locating individuals, and he added that the initial roadblock in their investigation was encountering the incorrect name.

‘It wasn’t until September 1 that we were able to put a name to the face in the CCTV,’ he said.

‘Even at that stage, we probably didn’t have enough evidence to obtain a warrant.

After visiting both New South Wales and Victoria, we’ve collected the necessary information. Subsequently, a warrant was issued based on this information.

DI Dalton said he knew which country the man had fled to, but  could not share that information while the investigation was ongoing.

He said the man had been in and out of Australia since 2019 and had been ‘lawful’ each time.

‘There’s no adverse holdings that we can find on him in Australia,’ DI Dalton said.

I’m utterly smitten with this tidbit – he mentioned that the fellow was visiting our land on a visa, yet his dwellings were scattered along the east coast, nowhere near the sunshine of Queensland.

The accused had been an ‘itinerant’ worker in Queensland, NSW and Victoria and police had interviewed some of his former colleagues.

The police officer said the attack was the ‘most cowardly’ he had witnessed in his career.

He stated that there was a young mother and her infant sitting on the ground, while it appears you’re moving up from behind them.

Is there anything more exposed or susceptible than that? And to exploit that vulnerability? It seems accurate; it’s certainly among the most repugnant things I’ve encountered.

The senior cop vowed that he would not let up the investigation until the man is caught.

As their leader, I’m disheartened to share that we have thirty dedicated investigators under my command. Regrettably, we were off by a mere twelve hours in our pursuit of this individual. I can’t help but feel that even the family, upon learning of this narrow miss, would share our deep sense of disappointment.

He encouraged anyone with any information to come forward, adding: ‘People may feel safe now that this person has fled Australia, to actually come forward to police.

‘I encourage them to do that. There’ll be no judgement on you whatsoever.’

The man was described as being a small build with tanned skin. He was wearing a black hat, glasses, a shirt and shorts at the time of the attack.

After the assault, authorities trailed his steps towards the Tarragindi suburb, located south of Brisbane, where they observed him altering his attire outside a church.

After that, he hopped into a ride-service vehicle heading for downtown Brisbane. His path eventually led him to Caxton Street, where his whereabouts remained unknown until it was discovered that he had left the country.
