Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han: The Surprising Truth About His Karate Kid Canon Status!
The movie “Karate Kid: Legends,” led by Ben Wang, occupies a special niche in the broader Miyagi-universe. This film is the first big-screen installment in the series in 15 years. When the 2010 version of “The Karate Kid” came out, it initially functioned as a reboot, with characters like Daniel LaRusso, Johnny Lawrence, and Mr. Miyagi not appearing in this particular universe. In this new storyline, Jackie Chan’s character, Mr. Han, who trains Jaden Smith’s main character Dre Parker, serves as the reincarnation of Mr. Miyagi from the original series.
In the movie “Karate Kid: Legends,” the character of Mr. Han, played by Jackie Chan, has a history that ties him to the earlier films. This creates a curiosity about whether he’s portraying a fresh take on Mr. Han, similar to JK Simmons reprising his role as J. Jonah Jameson in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” or if it’s actually the same Mr. Han from 2010.
In this conversation, Liam Crowley from ScreenRant had an engaging chat with director Jonathan Entwistle about the chronology of Mr. Han, the creative process behind making a Karate Kid movie that appeals to both new and longtime fans, as well as his unique vision for portraying New York City in the film, which carries some similarities to the style used in Marvel productions.
Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han Continues His Canon From 2010
“It’s all canon to the Karate Kid franchise…”
Although there are some adjustments made to his origin story, the character of Mr. Han in “Karate Kid: Legends” is undeniably the same one that viewers initially encountered in “The Karate Kid” (2010).
The character portrayed as Mr. Han in the Karate Kid franchise is consistent with the 2010 film “Karate Kid: Legends,” according to director Jonathan Entwistle’s confirmation. He emphasized that the original movie sets the foundation for everything and that this new chapter serves as a continuation of the original movies, just like how Cobra Kai represented a fresh start. Now that Cobra Kai has concluded, this new installment marks another step in the ongoing narrative.
Additionally, the following chapter has been designed to be appreciated by Karate Kid fans of any level, whether they are deep-rooted enthusiasts or casual observers.
Entwistle emphasized that the primary goal should be to transform this intellectual property into an entertaining experience for theater-goers, allowing them to immerse themselves fully in the seats. Once achieved, he believes one can truly appreciate the intricate connections to the original films and the creative liberties taken from Cobra Kai. For traditional Karate Kid fans, a 90-minute movie seems ideal for a television audience. He’s thrilled about upgrading what was once confined to TV screens into something more grandiose on the big screen.
Entwistle Took Marvel Inspiration For Karate Kid’s New York City
“That kind of X-Men, Spider-Man world of how New York feels…”
As a film enthusiast, I found myself immersed in the captivating roles that Entwistle brought to life, transcending even the impressive ensemble cast. In “Karate Kid: Legends,” we journey into the heart of New York City, where it feels as if the city itself is another character. Partnering once more with Justin Brown, I delved into the cinematography for this project, focusing on crafting a warm and whimsical New York City atmosphere that resembled a cozy comic book setting.
Entwistle expressed that Brown and he have shared every experience, and they approach such matters exceptionally well together. For him, the vision of New York he wanted to create was a snug, comic book-like version where Queens is just a brief scooter ride from Central Park, similar to the X-Men or Spider-Man universe. This depiction offers a genuine sense of a unique New York that’s only found in stories. The goal was to construct a New York that seemed movie-worthy, cinematic, something one would anticipate viewing at a theater.
