Jack Quaid’s ‘Novocaine’ Fails to Numb Slow Box Office Weekend

Novocaine topped the US box office over the weekend, but came in well below expectations, as did the rest of the latest offerings from Hollywood studios.

The thriller starring Jack Quaid as a young man, who can’t feel any pain due to his rare genetic makeup, on a mission to rescue the girl of his dreams from kidnappers.

The movie garnered a 82% positive critique rating on Rotten Tomatoes and audience members responded exceptionally well, giving it a rating of 89%.

Novocaine pulled in $8.7 million over the weekend, the lowest box office take since Argylle’s second-weekend in February 2024, with only $6.25 million, according to The Numbers.

A disastrous weekend of severe weather, which has resulted in the deaths of at least 34 individuals throughout the United States, may have caused a decline in box office sales.

In last week’s box office rankings, the movie “Mickey 17” featuring Robert Pattinson as a ‘disposable’ astronaut attempting to establish a colony on a perilous ice planet, slipped to second place, earning $7.51 million.

The movie titled “Newcomer Black Bag,” featuring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender as a couple of undercover spouses, debuted in third position at the box office with their loyalty being tested on screen.

The thriller, which also features the talents of Pierce Brosnan, Naomie Harris, Regé-Jean Page and Marisa Abela received a 97-percent review from the critics at Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience score was much lower, which perhaps foreshadowed its disappointing debut of a mere $7.5 million.

Fourth place went to Captain America: Brave New World. The latest Marvel offering starring Anthony Mackie as the title character landed with nearly $5.5 million in ticket sales.

Entering the fray in fifth place was The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.

The animated adventure follows Porky Pig and Daffy Duck who become the Earth’s only hope in the face of a threat from an alien invasion earned entered the box office atmosphere with $3.7 million.

The faith based, The Last Supper, debuted in sixth place.

The play revolving around the pivotal moments in the biblical narrative preceding Jesus’ betrayal garnered a total of $2.825 million in box office revenue.

Paddington in Peru fell out of the top five to seventh place.

The live action adventure featuring Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer and the voice of Ben Whishaw as the loveable toy bear, got a stamp in its passport worth 2.77 million.

In the eighth position, we find the lively movie character Dog Man. This weekend, the action-packed film about a crime-fighting hybrid (half-dog, half-human) brought in approximately $2.5 million at the box office.

The Monkey continued to scare the daylights out of fans, albeit fewer of them. The fright flick about a demonic toy that terrorizes Theo James and Tatiana Maslany was in ninth place with $2.46 million.

Rounding out the top ten was Last Breath.

Last week, the underwater mystery film featuring Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Finn Cole was in third position. However, this week, it saw a significant decrease in its ranking.

The rescue drama surfaced with $2.3 million.

Anora, which received a boost in ticket sales from its multiple awards at the Oscars last week, dropped from seventh place to 13th, earning  $640,000 over the weekend.
