Jack Quaid compares Companion character to Scream’s killer Richie

Jack Quaid expresses joy about openly discussing his portrayal of the character ‘Companion’, labeling him as more “nervous” or “anxious” than the character Richie from ‘Scream’.

In the recently praised blend of horror and science fiction, our protagonist, Quaid, portrays Josh. Accompanied by his robot companion Iris (played by Sophie Thatcher), they embark on a relaxing getaway with friends. However, things take an unexpectedly grim turn.

Asked by Digital Spy if I thought Josh and Richie would hit it off, I couldn’t agree more: “Simply two unsure guys, just enjoying a drink together.

To truly understand what sets Josh apart, you should definitely check out the show “Companion.” Notably, Quaid points out that Josh and Richie are quite distinct individuals.

In that movie, “Richie” is primarily working on maintaining an illusion for the audience – making sure they don’t suspect him as the villain. He’s also trying to keep his role as a potential “Scream” killer hidden, which he enjoys immensely because of his love for over-the-top performances.

Josh, right from the start of the film, it’s clear that he’s the main adversary. What I admired about his character development in the script and one of the key factors behind me wanting to produce this movie is that he wasn’t a stereotypical, over-the-top villain.

The character isn’t aware he’s playing the antagonist; instead, he’s simply a man grappling with his own troubles. In a less complex version of this film, Josh might have been the hero, while Iris goes through turmoil, and it would be up to Josh to resolve things. However, what I appreciate about this story is that the ‘villain’ is actually a human character.

He’s undeniably one of the most insecure characters I’ve portrayed throughout my acting career. During scenes, it’s crucial to understand his perspective, despite the questionable decisions he makes. Now, it feels great to simply exclaim, ‘I’m done with Josh’.

Prior to the premiere of “Companion”, Sophie Thatcher, who acted alongside Quaid, shared her thoughts on the film with Digital Spy as well, expressing that it offered her an exciting opportunity to explore fresh aspects in her acting.

She mused, “The initial scenes have an airy feel, yet I find myself attracted to more somber roles. As this film takes a turn towards darkness, it was intriguing to explore that lighter aspect at the start.

Companion is released in cinemas on January 31.
