Jack Lowden’s “spectacular” drama with Peter Capaldi is a must-see on TV tonight

Jack Lowden is becoming a well-known actor, thanks to his role as River Cartwright in the popular Apple TV+ spy series Slow Horses. If you’ve enjoyed his work on that show, you might not be familiar with some of his films. Luckily, one of his best movies is on TV tonight, now that Slow Horses has finished its current season.

The moving historical film Benediction, praised by IndieWire as “spectacular” upon its 2021 release, stars Jack Lowden as Siegfried Sassoon, a celebrated poet and World War I soldier. Sassoon was recognized for his courage in battle but later became a prominent voice against the ongoing war.

I’m a huge fan of Siegfried Sassoon, and this film really gets into what shaped his incredible poetry. It shows his time fighting in World War I and how those experiences on the Western Front led him to become such a powerful voice during the war. But it’s also a really moving story about him figuring out who he was as a person, including coming to terms with his sexuality. It’s a complete picture of the man behind the poems.

Not only is Benediction a standout film in Jack Lowden’s growing career, but it also showcases a fantastic performance by Peter Capaldi, who plays the older Siegfried Sassoon. With a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear this movie is receiving widespread critical acclaim, not just from us.

If you’d like to watch it now or again, Benediction is on BBC Two tonight at 11pm. That’s a little late, even for a Friday night, but it will also be available to stream on BBC iPlayer after it airs.

The film Benediction showcases an early major movie role for Tom Blyth, known for The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and also stars acclaimed actors Simon Russell Beale, Jeremy Irvine, Ben Daniels, and Gemma Jones.

Next month, Lowden will appear in the political comedy-drama Ella McCay, with Emma Mackey, Ayo Edebiri, Albert Brooks, Woody Harrelson, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

I’m really excited for this new movie coming out on December 12th! It’s set back in 2008 and centers around this ambitious young politician. It seems like she’s juggling a lot – trying to build her career while also dealing with all the usual family drama. It looks like a really relatable story, seeing how she handles everything!

You can watch Benediction tonight at 11pm on BBC Two, and it will also be available on BBC iPlayer after it airs.
