Colin Firth, the acclaimed British actor, will star in a new detective drama coming to Apple TV, alongside Jack Lowden. The series, based on Philip Kerr’s popular Bernie Gunther novels, will be directed by Tom Shankland, with a script written by Peter Straughan.
The new series, currently being filmed in Berlin, centers around Bernie Gunther, a police detective who has just been promoted to the city’s Murder Squad.
This drama takes place in 1928 and centers on Bernie, who is investigating a serial killer targeting people on the margins of society.
What to Read Next
The series starts with the last book in Philip Kerr’s Bernie Gunther novels, telling the story of how Bernie became the detective we know – a former police officer who now works as a private investigator.
As reported by Deadline, Colin Firth will star in the upcoming project, reuniting him with writer Peter Straughan, whom he previously worked with on the 2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Firth will play Paul Lohser, a highly intelligent but difficult detective with the Berlin Police.

He’s precise, reserved, and highly intelligent – the complete opposite of Bernie. As Bernie’s partner and a surprising guide, Lohser represents his only chance to find the murderer.
Bad Wolf, along with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s PlayTone production company, and writers/directors Straughan and Shankland, created the series.
I was reading a review of the book, and Lee Child – you know, the guy who writes the Jack Reacher novels – called Bernie one of the best anti-heroes ever. It’s a pretty big compliment coming from him, honestly!
“Kerr leads us through the facts of history and the vagaries of human nature,” said Hanks.
