Jack Black’s Comedy Reboot With MCU Star Dominates American Streaming At The Perfect Time

Jack Black’s 2025 movie slithered straight to the top of the streaming charts.

Paul Rudd, known for his roles in Marvel movies and other films, actually appeared in the movie Anaconda. The story follows two friends, Griff (played by Rudd) and Doug (played by Black), who decide to relive their favorite adventure film, Anaconda, as a way to cope with a midlife crisis. They gather a film crew and venture into the Amazon rainforest, only to find themselves facing a terrifyingly real encounter with a massive snake that begins to hunt them.

Okay, so this comedy snuck up on everyone! It came out late last year, but it’s just hit number one on Netflix here in the US and topped the charts on HBO Max in a bunch of other countries. It’s a bit of a split, though. Critics aren’t exactly raving – it’s sitting at a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, and one reviewer said it really didn’t deliver. But audiences? They clearly disagree! The Popcornmeter, which reflects what viewers actually think, has it at a solid 78%. It’s one of those movies where the public and the critics just don’t see eye to eye.

Jack Black’s comedic talent is having a moment, coinciding with the release of his new animated film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. He voices the villain Bowser, joining Chris Pratt as Mario, Brie Larson as Rosalina, and Charlie Day as Luigi. The movie is based on the popular 2007 and 2010 Super Mario Galaxy video games and is a sequel to the 2023 The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Audiences might be surprised to hear Mario say his iconic phrase, “Mamma Mia!” in the new Super Mario movie. Chris Pratt altered the delivery of the line to fit his vision for the character, questioning why a character from Brooklyn would use the phrase so often without a matching accent.

In the original game, Mario delivers the famous line quickly and with a high voice. But Chris Pratt, who plays Mario in the movie, decided to change his delivery based on what was happening in the scene. He explained that the phrase “Mamma Mia” is typically spoken with an Italian accent, so he slowed it down to make it sound more natural.

Jack Black has been in several video game movies, and he’s hoping to do another. He recently expressed interest in being in a film based on the popular Sega game series, Yakuza. He joked that even if there isn’t a role for a larger American actor, Sega should consider him. The Yakuza series began in 2005 with its release on the PlayStation 2 and centers around the story of Kazuma Kiryu as he navigates Tokyo’s underworld.
