As a seasoned movie buff and music enthusiast with over three decades of entertainment industry exposure, I must say that the recent turn of events surrounding Tenacious D is both intriguing and concerning.
Tenacious D, known for their blend of satire and rock comedy, isn’t planning on disappearing anytime soon, according to Jack Black. However, he suggests that we may need to be patient before they release new work again.
Tenacious D, the band formed by Black alongside actor Kyle Gass, announced this week that they will return following the cancellation of their July tour. “Everyone requires some downtime occasionally,” Black explained to Variety during the “Borderlands” premiere on Tuesday.
Last month, the comedian known for “School of Rock” revealed that Tenacious D would postpone their summer tour following a contentious statement by Gass concerning the attempted assassination of ex-President Donald Trump. On July 13th, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., Trump was wounded in a shooting incident. Tragically, one attendee lost their life, and two others were left severely injured. The Secret Service ultimately took out the gunman.
On the day following the shooting incident, Gass shared the news during a performance. When prompted to express a birthday wish during a concert in Sydney, Gass said, “Make sure you don’t miss Trump next time.” This statement caused an uproar, leading to the postponement of a show in Newcastle, Australia, due to the ensuing controversy. Eventually, the tour was cancelled, as it was scheduled to visit New Zealand and the United States as well.
“The actor from ‘Kung Fu Panda’ expressed on Instagram last month that he was taken aback by the remarks made at the show on Sunday. He clearly stated that he does not support or endorse hateful language or the incitement of violence for political purposes in any shape or form.”
At that moment, he stated, “I think it’s inappropriate to carry on with the Tenacious D tour, and I’m putting all future creative projects on pause.”
Previously known for his criticism towards the Trump family, Gass made an apology on Instagram for a questionable remark he made. However, as of today, that specific post has been taken down from his account. In a July statement, Gass himself admitted that his comment was inappropriate and expressed regret over his poor judgment. The incident sparked criticism, with figures like Elon Musk and Ralph Babet joining the backlash against him amidst the controversy.
About a month following Gass’ remark, Black shared with Variety that their friendship with their bandmate “remains unaltered.”
“These things take time sometimes,” he told the outlet, “and we’ll be back when it feels right.”
In 1994, Jack Black and Kyle Gass established the band Tenacious D, which later garnered a devoted fanbase due to their amusing short films and tracks like “Tribute” and “The Rise of Fenix.” More recently, they released a song titled “…Baby One More Time,” which was part of Jack Black’s fourth installment of the Kung Fu Panda series.
