J.K. Simmons originally passed on playing Omni-Man in Invincible
As a long-time gamer and comic book enthusiast, I must confess that J.K. Simmons’ portrayal of Omni-Man in Invincible has been nothing short of electrifying. His vocal performance brings a chilling authenticity to the character, making me question if there was ever any other actor who could have done justice to the role.
Through his roles in “Spider-Man” and “Justice League,” the Academy Award-winning actor, J.K. Simmons, has earned recognition among comic book enthusiasts as a familiar figure. Notably, he is currently best recognized for portraying Omni-Man in the superhero series “Invincible,” airing on Prime Video, which brings Robert Kirkman’s cherished comics to life.
From a devoted fan perspective, I’d say that much like Superman, Omni-Man boasts abilities such as flight, superhuman strength, and unmatched durability. Yet, his ethical standards starkly contrast the Man of Steel. As an emissary for the interstellar Viltrumite Empire, Omni-Man is tasked with covertly preparing Earth for a Viltrumite conquest, employing whatever methods are deemed necessary.
Among the series’ beloved characters, Omni-Man is one of Simmons’ favorites. He relishes the part and we can scarcely envision anyone else playing it as convincingly as him. In the show’s early casting phases, the outcome could have been drastically different. Originally, a different role was proposed to Simmons, which he turned down, even though he was enthused by the storyline.
“Out of nowhere, Invincible appeared before me, and I read what seemed to be the only script available, finding it quite impressive,” Simmons shared with GQ. “Initially, they had proposed I play a different character, which I found smart, weird, and cool. However, I didn’t see myself fitting that role and declined the offer… Months later, they asked me to portray Nolan, Omni-Man, and the story continues as we know it.”
Initially, Simmons didn’t disclose the part that was initially proposed to him. To make an educated guess, his voice seems fitting for characters such as Cecil Steadman or The Immortal. However, it was the role of Omni-Man that caught his attention; interestingly enough, he had no clue about how violent his character truly was. “I didn’t realize how dark it was at first,” he admitted. “To me, it was just another intriguing father character.”
One significant factor that drew him towards the project was the opportunity to collaborate with Steven Yeun and Sandra Oh, two performers he has long respected. He said, “I knew they were already part of the cast, and I thought, ‘They are both amazing, and I would be thrilled to work with them, even if it’s just voice acting for an animation.'”
In the second season, J.K. Simmons played a somewhat smaller role because Omni-Man had left Earth at that time. He reappeared more prominently towards the end of the season. As for the third season, Omni-Man and his son Invincible will be the main focus again. However, the release date for season 3 hasn’t been announced yet; creator Robert Kirkman mentioned that we should hear about it later in the year.
