ITV’s “nightmare come true” real-life drama with Sheridan Smith you need to know about

I’m really excited about an upcoming heart-wrenching, true-to-life tale that’s in the works, starring the incredible Sheridan Smith! As a big fan, I can’t wait to see what she brings to this story.

The upcoming television show titled “I Fought The Law” derives inspiration from the heart-wrenching memoir, “For The Love of Julie“, penned by Ann Ming. Originally published in 2008, this powerful book recounts a mother’s relentless pursuit of justice to bring her daughter’s killer to trial for a crime she believed was unpunishable.

In 1989, Julie, Ming’s daughter, tragically passed away at the age of 22. It was several months after she vanished that her lifeless body was discovered hidden behind a bathroom panel. Driven by the quest for justice, Ming tirelessly fought against the Double Jeopardy Law to ensure the person responsible for Julie’s death faced punishment in court.

The title of the book is ominously stated as: “A Frightening Reality. A Mother’s Valor. An Uphill Battle for Justice.” This chilling premise has been skillfully translated to the small screen by Jamie Crichton, whose impressive television writing portfolio includes All Creatures Great and Small and Grantchester.

In the production of ITV’s four-part drama series, I Fought The Law, Ann Ming has taken on a consulting role during the filming process. This series is being brought to life by Hera Pictures, a UK production company that has also created HBO’s Mary & George, ITV’s trending drama Honour (recently popular on Netflix), and Jodie Comer’s British movie titled The End We Start From.

In a press announcement, Ming expressed his satisfaction that Hera Pictures will portray the narrative of his crusade to repeal the Double Jeopardy Law. His daughter’s murderer was erroneously acquitted, and years later admitted to the crime, but could only be charged with perjury because of the 800-year-old Double Jeopardy Law. Determined to seek justice for Julie, Ming refused to let this antiquated law hinder his efforts.

As a gamer putting myself into the shoes of Ann Ming, I’m absolutely thrilled to share that Sheridan Smith will be bringing my character to life in the ITV series! The idea of having such an iconic and gifted actress embody me leaves me feeling overwhelmed with joy. It’s simply incredible!

The BAFTA-winning actress, known for portraying various real-life figures on television, expressed: “I feel incredibly privileged to have been chosen to depict Ann Ming, a mother who relentlessly advocated for justice in the murder of her daughter. For over fifteen years, she tirelessly campaigned for the modification of the Double Jeopardy Law.

“She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.”

When can we expect to see “I Fought the Law”? At this moment, there isn’t a confirmed release date. However, production began in August 2024 across North East England’s Teesside and its surrounding regions.

We’ve caught a glimpse of Sheridan Smith embodying the character on set, showcasing her amazing transformation for the part.

In addition to the main players, we have Daniel York Loh from “Scarborough,” Enzo Cilenti known for his roles in “Luther” and “The Crown,” Marlowe Chan-Reeves who has appeared in “Doctor Who,” Kent Riley famed for his work on “Mr Bates vs The Post Office,” Andrew Lancel recognized from “Unforgotten,” and Jake Davies, best known for his performance in “Grace.

I Fought the Law is coming to ITV.
