ITV has shared a first look at new espionage thriller Betrayal, starring Vigil’s Shaun Evans.
In a different scenario, John Hughes, portrayed by Evans, is a character who entered MI5 during the fight against global terrorism. He’s grappling with issues at home and finding it challenging to adapt within his workplace.
John’s life takes a new turn when he crosses paths with Ehsan, a man of British-Iranian descent with connections to the Manchester underworld, who asserts that he possesses information regarding a potential threat to the United Kingdom.
Before John could obtain the information, Ehsan was fatally shot by an unidentified assassin. In response, John eliminated this assailant, triggering a series of incidents that ultimately placed him in conflict with his professional superiors.
Although top officials at MI5 suspect that John is entangled in a violent dispute over territory among Manchester gangs, John instead focuses on investigating Ehsan’s background to discover the facts and clear his own name.

John experiences additional upheaval in his private life as he develops a strong bond with Mehreen, a skilled intelligence officer tasked to replace him on the Iran desk.
The series, which starts in London and Manchester, will commence shooting in early 2025, with plans for it to be broadcasted around next year. Below are some photos captured during the filming process.
The play was composed by David Eldridge, best known for writing “The Scandalous Lady W” in 2015, featuring Natalie Dormer. Overseeing this production is Julian Jarrold, the director of “A Very Royal Scandal”.

Alongside Evans, Betrayal also stars Atonement‘s Romola Garai and EastEnders’ Zahra Ahmad.
According to Evans, it’s a pleasure to come back to ITV with this remarkably crafted and relevant project.
I’m thrilled to be working alongside David Eldridge again, as we breathe life into his thought-provoking perspective on the realm of espionage. I can’t wait until we can share this with ITV viewers in the near future.
Betrayal is expected to arrive on ITV early next year.
