ITV MI5 officer thriller with Shaun Evans that sees “loyalty and deception collide” gets first look

I just saw the first sneak peek of this new ITV thriller called Betrayal, and it looks amazing! It stars Shaun Evans – you might know him from Vigil – and he plays an MI5 agent who gets put under investigation when someone he’s close to turns up dead. It’s going to be a really tense watch, I can already tell!

The first images from the show are now available, featuring Luke Evans in costume with his fellow actors like Romola Garai. These come after some initial on-set photos were released earlier this year.

Betrayal explores the complex world of relationships, where trust and dishonesty often go hand-in-hand. The story focuses on John Hughes, an MI5 officer trying to balance the demands of a changing job with his personal life.

What to Read Next

Following a suspicion, he made contact with a British-Iranian man with ties to a criminal group in Stockport, who suggested he had information about a potential attack in the UK. However, before he could get any details, the man was shot and killed – and John immediately killed the shooter.

John suddenly becomes the subject of an internal investigation, with his bosses, including Simone Grant, questioning his actions. Meanwhile, his partner, Claire, struggles with the fact that he keeps so much hidden from her.

I’m really hooked by the story! It sounds like John is trying so hard to fix his marriage, but he just can’t seem to move on from this case he’s working on. Things get even more interesting when he meets Mehreen Askari-Evans, played by Zahra Ahmadi. She’s an intelligence operative who’s supposed to take over his job, but it looks like they end up teaming up – a pretty unexpected pairing, honestly!

John is becoming more and more certain that a radical group within the Iranian government is involved in something, and he’s starting to suspect there’s a threat coming from someone nearby. He needs to figure out who the target is and stop the attack before it happens.

The cast also includes Gamba Cole, known from The Outlaws; Omid Djalili, who starred in His Dark Materials; Matthew Tennyson from Grantchester; Hayley Tamaddon of Unforgotten; Anthony Flanagan, seen in House of the Dragon; Paddy Rowan from G’wed; and Waj Ali, known for Out There.

The cast also includes Karim Kadjar (known for Wolf Hall), Emma Cunniffe (The Long Shadow), Georgina Rylance (Sherlock), Ben Lambert (Outlander), Julia Watson (Doctor Who), and Julian Wadham (Black Dove).

The new play, Betrayal, is written by David Eldridge, who also wrote The Scandalous Lady W, and is directed by Julian Jarrold, known for A Very Royal Scandal.

Betrayal will air on ITV1 and ITVX in 2026.
