ITV fans claim gripping Irish crime thriller is ‘better than Kin’ as viewers brand the BBC series a ‘poor man’s version’ of classic show
As a lifestyle expert with an extensive background in entertainment and a deep appreciation for gritty Irish dramas, I must say that after immersing myself in both Love/Hate and Kin, I wholeheartedly agree with the viewers’ consensus: Love/Hate is undeniably superior to Kin.
ITV fans have claimed an Irish crime thriller is ‘better than‘ the hit Irish BBC series Kin.
Recently, the beloved series Love/Hate, initially aired in 2010, has sparked national interest once more as it returns to ITVX.
Although the two Irish gritty dramas share some similarities, some viewers perceive Kin as a less refined adaptation compared to Love/Hate.
Since its debut in 2021, the gripping RTE gangland drama starring Charlie Cox, Clare Dunne, Aidan Gillen, and Ciaran Hinds has kept viewers captivated across two seasons.
The show, titled “Kin,” quickly became a popular choice on the Irish channel, managing to attract approximately 599,000 viewers during its season two finale.
Based on reports, the first series, boasting a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, could potentially not be renewed for a third season as the principal actors’ contracts are set to expire.
Now fans have moved their attention on to the classic favourite Love/Hate to get their Irish fix.
“Love/Hate” is a gripping crime series set in Dublin’s criminal scene. It portrays the dark realities of drug abuse, poverty, and violence associated with organized crime that flourished in post-economic boom Ireland.
Taking to X, fans wrote: ‘Watching #Kin again ,it’s brilliant show nearly as good as love hate’,
‘Kin is definitely a poor man’s Love Hate’,
I followed up watching Kin with Love/Hate, and I must say, I enjoyed both! Some familiar faces appear in both shows, but Love/Hate has a grittier feel to it. Regardless, it’s an engaging series worth checking out.
As a connoisseur of captivating content, I find myself immersed in the world of #Kin. The question lingers: is this production aiming to be a spinoff of #LoveHate, or merely a coincidence? The atmosphere, even the music, shares an uncanny resemblance with its predecessor, leaving me intrigued and curious about its intent.
‘2 Irish crime dramas, Love/Hate (ITVX) & Kin (BBC iPlayer)’,
“If you’ve got a soft spot for Kin, I strongly recommend you explore Love/Hate. It’s quite similar and can be found on ITVx. Essentially, it’s Ireland’s equivalent to The Wire.”
‘Love/Hate written before kin Irish one but better’.
According to Sinan Sicimoglu, who played the pawn shop owner on the second season of “Kin,” he shared with the Irish Sun in April that the Kinsella family’s story might be wrapping up because all the main actors signed three-year contracts back in 2020. However, it is now 2024, and those contracts have expired.
Removing key characters such as Michael Kinsella (Cox), Amanda Kinsella (Dunne), Frank Kinsella (Gillen), Jimmie Kinsella (Emmett Scanlon), and Eric Kinsella (Sam Keeley) – all of whom have been present in every episode RTE has aired to date.
Dunne, who vividly portrays the Kinsella matriarch, has shared her thoughts on potential third installments, confessing that she’s unaware of any plans in this regard.
However, in contrast with Sicimoglu’s comments, she added that she would be up for making a return.
She expressed, on the red carpet at the Irish Film & Television Awards, where ‘Kin’ was awarded Best Drama, that if the experience were to return, she would be thrilled. However, should it not recur, she suggested we should appreciate the good times we had already experienced. Regardless of the outcome, she assured everything will turn out alright.
Dunne stated, “I believe we could reunite if we manage to coordinate everything perfectly, considering the high-profile actors, since it depends on their schedules.”
