Netflix’s latest psychological thriller, titled “It’s What’s Inside“, is a thought-provoking, head-scratcher of a series that demands your full focus.

The film that was successful at Sundance follows the theme of “social gatherings turning disastrous,” similar to movies like “Bodies Bodies Bodies” and “Talk to Me.” However, this time it introduces a science fiction element: instead of a usual pre-wedding party, these friends meet up with a surprise – one among them has brought a device capable of swapping bodies!

In this unique take on traditional social games such as Werewolf and Mafia, a surprising philosophical spin is introduced. Just like these popular games, it becomes increasingly evident throughout the gameplay that trust among all participants cannot be blindly assumed.

If the conclusion of “It’s What’s Inside” left you feeling a bit puzzled, let’s take a closer look to clarify all the details and address any remaining doubts you may have.

Warning: Significant plot points lie ahead, so if you haven’t watched “It’s What’s Inside” yet, it’s best not to proceed further to preserve the impact of the movie’s storyline.

It’s What’s Inside explained: Who ended up in whose body?

At the gathering, it’s the tech entrepreneur, Forbes, who arrives with an innovative device in tow. He’s been away from the group for close to a decade now. Previously, there was a birthday celebration where his underage sister Beatrice consumed alcohol, an incident that resulted in Forbes being dismissed from college.

Initially, everyone seems hesitant to dive into the game, but eventually, they find themselves immersed in it. The concept revolves around Forbes swapping identities, after which everyone must figure out where each person ended up.

The initial round passed off rather uneventfully, with the exception of an unusual instance where Forbes acted as if he were Cyrus inside Dennis’s body, when in reality it was Cyrus occupying Reuben’s body. This peculiar situation, however, enabled Cyrus (in Reuben’s body) to share a kiss with Nikki, whom he has harbored affection for, despite being in a nine-year relationship with Shelby.

(This is all important for later though, so remember all of this.)

In the second stage is when events start getting chaotic. To keep things clear, let’s first establish who’s occupying which body, so we can easily revisit this information if necessary.

Nikki is inhabiting Shelby’s physical form.

Tomorrow is Reuben’s wedding day, but all he can think about is Maya, an ex-girlfriend of his. In Dennis’s form, Reuben sees an opportunity to kiss ‘Maya’ when Brooke is inhabiting her body instead.

Tragically, they found themselves kissing on the dilapidated roof, a fact that was evident by the poor condition of the building. Consequently, it gave way beneath them, leading to their fatal plunge. However, it’s crucial to note that Brooke and Reuben perished in this accident, but Maya (in Shelby’s form) and Dennis (in Cyrus’s form) survived.

Maya and Dennis adamantly decline returning into the bodies of Reuben and Brooke, with Dennis taking it a step further by contacting the police under the identity of Cyrus, alleging that Cyrus had forced them to their demise.

Meanwhile, as events unfold, Forbes tries to flee with the device, but Nikki subdues him and binds him instead. Only Shelby, apart from Nikki, understands how to operate the machine, yet she stubbornly refuses to relinquish control of her own body for that purpose.

Cyrus earnestly tells Shelby that his feelings for her are genuine and not for Nikki. Yet, Maya is present as well, and upon hearing that Cyrus had been in Reuben’s body during the first round, she recalls their shared moment when she was in Nikki’s body at the same time, and remembers Cyrus kissing her.

In simpler terms, Shelby proposes a deal that Cyrus finds hard to refuse. If he accepts, she plans to remain inside Nikki’s body while transforming him into Reuben. This leaves Dennis to handle the police (posing as Cyrus) and the two of them would flee together.

The predicament lies in Nikki having a unique arrangement with Forbes that involves everyone returning to their original bodies, but an exception is made for Dennis who will take over Forbes’s body, and vice versa for Reuben. To make this happen, Nikki manipulates the situation by inducing her own allergic reaction to peanuts. Her aim is to get Shelby to consent to Forbes inspecting the machine setup, as she believes this deception will persuade Shelby.

In this scenario, Shelby’s life depends on Nikki, who has possession of the EpiPen. However, Nikki will only provide it if Forbes examines a certain machine first. After Forbes checks the device, he administers the crucial EpiPen injection to Shelby, effectively saving her life through Nikki’s body.

Unbeknownst to all, Forbes was not present at the gathering, but an unexpected twist unfolds: it was Beatrice who had been inhabiting Forbes’s form throughout the event. Her motive? Seeking retribution for the events of a disastrous party a decade prior, which left her with a burning desire for vengeance.

Previously, Forbes had been making visits to Beatrice, who was residing in a facility following a significant incident at a party. He believed that a certain device could help reestablish their connection, but instead, Beatrice managed to knock him unconscious. As a result, Forbes found himself inhabiting Beatrice’s body, with her attending the pre-wedding celebration in his place.

As I step into the wedding venue the following day, Forbes (now inhabiting Beatrice’s form) shares a chilling revelation with me: “It turns out she’s been brewing anger, building resentment, biding her time to exact revenge on all of us.

Before flipping the final switch on that machine, I seized my last opportunity for retaliation by strategically placing certain individuals. And lo and behold, the outcome unfolded exactly as I had planned.

• Dennis in Forbes’ physical form

In the first round, Beatrice withdrew funds from Dennis’s account while disguising herself as Cyrus within Dennis’s body. This setup falsely implicates Cyrus for stealing the money prior to his alleged act of pushing Dennis to his demise.

Furthermore, it provides Beatrice with an ample amount of funds to savor her new chapter in life, pursuing her endeavors as a social media influencer known as Nikki.

But can we be sure Shelby is really Shelby? Let’s dig into it.

Given the frequent character swaps, it’s understandable if you find yourself questioning whether the woman who meets Cyrus in prison at the end of “It’s What’s Inside” is truly Shelby. After all, it’s Cyrus we can be sure of.

It’s undoubtedly Shelby, primarily due to the process of deduction since there’s no other plausible mix-up of bodies involved. Additionally, it’s because she has knowledge that others don’t. She confides in Cyrus that the proposition to remain in Nikki’s body was just a test, and his response exposed that he had been deceiving Shelby throughout their entire relationship.

Consequently, she decides not to assist Cyrus and supports the narrative that he was under the influence of drugs during the party, insinuating that the whole incident was a staged game. However, it is implied that in reality, he had pushed Dennis and Brooke to their deaths after moving Dennis’s trust fund into an offshore account.

However, if you find yourself wondering why Beatrice allowed Shelby to have the sole joyful conclusion (apart from her own), there’s an essential detail from earlier in the movie. At the start of the gathering, it is Shelby who needs reminding about Forbes, as she was not present at the tragic event that transpired.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but empathize with Shelby, understanding her predicament all too well. Dennis deceived everyone, including me, about his tryst with Beatrice while he was with Nikki. Similarly, Cyrus has been dishonest towards Shelby, feigning indifference towards Nikki, whom I believe they both share feelings for.

In the second round, when Beatrice (in Reuben’s body) proposes that Shelby try Cyrus’s affection using the Nikki offer, Shelby replies by questioning why Beatrice would understand her reasons for remaining in Nikki’s body. Beatrice counters: “What do you mean, ‘get it’? How deceivers manage to escape consequences?

Beatrice ensured that Cyrus wouldn’t escape the consequences of his deceit, and as he learned in prison, that was “the final lie you will ever tell me.” (or)
