It’s time to give up that “Daemon is the Night King” theory once and for all, House of the Dragon fans

As a long-time fan who has spent countless hours poring over the intricate world of Westeros and Essos, I can confidently say that the theory suggesting Daemon Targaryen is the Night King is nothing more than a wildfire burning in the wind. This notion is as misguided as Dany thinking she could conquer Winterfell with just Unsullied and Dothraki forces!

Speculations about the plot in “Game of Thrones” were abundant every season, as viewers eagerly attempted to predict upcoming events. Some of these predictions eventually materialized, but many were simply too far-fetched for serious consideration. Yet, this speculation continues with the spin-off series, “House of the Dragon,” which concluded its second season on August 4.

In relation to George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” source material, numerous incidents anticipated by book fans have undergone significant alterations in the series, leaving viewers unsure of what will transpire next. Although there remain unanswered questions leading up to the third season, a widely held fan theory requires clarification. Since the initial season, a popular speculation circulating within the fan base is that Daemon Targaryen might be the Night King, the ruler of the White Walkers from “Game of Thrones”. While it may seem preposterous, some fans appear convinced by this notion!

No, Daemon is not the Night King

In online forums such as Reddit discussions since its first season, a theory about ‘The Tab’ character named Daemon has resurfaced in July. The article suggests that some TikTok users have noticed a resemblance between Daemon and the Night King, an idea I strongly contest. Additionally, it claims that the Night King is fire-resistant, making him a Targaryen. However, this is factually incorrect. To clarify, not all Targaryens are fireproof; this is more of a misconception, as stated by George R.R. Martin himself. Furthermore, during the time of the war between the First Men and the Children of the Forest, there were no Targaryens present. Is it plausible to assume that Daemon existed tens of thousands of years before Aegon’s Conquest? Let’s think critically about this theory.

As a devoted reader, I can’t help but mention that the piece subtly hints at Daemon’s destiny, a revelation I intentionally withhold from casual readers to maintain the element of surprise. However, even as a fan, I must admit it seems somewhat far-fetched, though the suspense keeps me eagerly turning the pages!

Daemon sees the Song of Ice and Fire

Beyond these points strongly suggesting otherwise, the finale of House of the Dragon’s second season clearly demonstrates that Daemon is not the Night King. In what appears to be Daemon’s final vision at Harrenhal, we see glimpses of the Song of Ice and Fire unfolding rapidly, showing scenes of the Three-Eyed Raven, White Walkers, deceased dragons and humans, and Daenerys Targaryen. Then, he foresees Rhaenyra sitting on the Iron Throne, a sight that solidifies his belief in her as the rightful queen. In his vision, Helaena also appears, hinting that this is all part of a story and that Daemon has a specific role to fulfill within it.

It’s evident that Daemon isn’t actually serving as the Night King in this narrative, but rather gearing up for him. His role involves supporting Rhaenyra in her efforts to unify the realm so that a Targaryen can continue to rule the Iron Throne when the ominous darkness descends.

Although the idea that one of our familiar characters might transform into the Night King might seem entertaining to some, it is illogical for Daemon or any Targaryen to do so. Thankfully, such a scenario would be quite ridiculous and unwise.

It’s likely that there will be some surprising scenes ahead, given that House of the Dragon has been greenlit for a third season and is planned to run for four seasons in total. Despite some viewers expressing dissatisfaction with the speed of the second season, showrunner Ryan Condal hinted that the third season will be all about war. As we move forward, let’s keep our fingers crossed that there won’t be any far-fetched plot twists like the Daemon theory for any characters.

The first two seasons of House of the Dragon are streaming on Max.
