It’s the End of an Era for Marvel’s Punisher In the MCU

Jon Bernthal is returning as the Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this time, his story will break new ground compared to previous appearances. After appearing in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series, Frank Castle will be featured in a new project slated for release in 2026.

Jon Bernthal is returning as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, in the upcoming movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is set to release in June 2025. This marks a significant change, as it will be the first time the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the Punisher appears in a film not rated R. In fact, Brand New Day will be the first major Marvel movie – including those outside the main MCU – to feature the Punisher with a PG-13 rating.

Before Jon Bernthal played the Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character appeared in three separate R-rated movies. The first, starring Dolph Lundgren, came out in 1989 and was produced by New World Pictures. Thomas Jane then took on the role in a 2004 film from Lionsgate Films. Lionsgate also made another Punisher movie in 2008, titled Punisher: War Zone, featuring Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle.

What To Expect From Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of the Punisher is famous for being one of the most intense and violent characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Throughout his appearances, he consistently eliminates threats with extreme force, leading to some of the most graphic violence seen in the entire franchise.

Although there have been hints about the Punisher coming back in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the specifics of his story are still a secret. However, most fans believe his character will be much less violent than how he’s been portrayed in recent streaming series with Daredevil.

The movie is likely to greatly affect Spider-Man’s development. Seeing the Punisher, a much more brutal hero, could force Spider-Man to confront the harsh realities of the world as he matures beyond high school and truly understands the dangers he faces.

We might learn more about how the Punisher will appear in Spider-Man 4 when the first trailer is released, potentially before the year ends. Currently, it’s unclear how Frank Castle will fit into the movie’s PG-13 rating, as he typically appears in more mature content.

Tom Holland will return as Spider-Man in the fourth solo movie featuring the character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will also star Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando, and Jon Bernthal. The story focuses on Spider-Man rebuilding his life and fighting crime at a local level, in a world where his identity remains a secret. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for release on July 31, 2026.
