The first season of CBS’s NCIS: Origins concludes a significant chapter for the NCIS franchise. In the season finale, the agency officially changes its name from NIS to NCIS. The show, which explores the beginning of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ career—portrayed by Austin Stowell as the younger version of Mark Harmon’s character—wraps up its second season with this pivotal shift.

Mark Harmon played the lead role of Gibbs until he left NCIS during Season 19. Now, Sean Murray steps into a younger version of Gibbs in the 1990s, as he begins his career with NCIS, which has brought renewed attention to the original character. The season finale also finally develops the relationship between Gibbs and Special Agent Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino), paving the way for Season 3.

It’s Officially The End Of NIS In NCIS: Origins Season 2

The second season of NCIS: Origins concludes with a pivotal moment: the official creation of the agency that would become the foundation of the NCIS franchise. Previously known as the Naval Investigative Service, the agency undergoes a rebranding process, spearheaded by Cliff Wheeler (Patrick Fischler), the head of the Camp Pendleton office, in an attempt to secure the future of his team.

The show’s origins closely follow real life: just like the actual Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), the fictional version was created after a major scandal led to a reorganization of its predecessor, NIS. In the show, a team at Camp Pendleton, led by Diany Rodriguez, is responsible for establishing NCIS, focusing on investigating crimes.

The rebranding of NIS happened while reports surfaced about misconduct within the military. Wheeler announced that Admiral Jacob Cane (played by Brian Letscher) had been removed as director and replaced with Tom Morrow. Morrow is a significant character because he’s the first director to work with Gibbs on the original NCIS series in Washington.

Vera assembled a team to develop a proposal for the new director, focusing on changing the agency’s name from NIS to NCIS. The team also recommended keeping the office at Camp Pendleton instead of spreading agents to other locations, arguing that maintaining a presence on a military base would demonstrate NCIS’s dedication to investigating issues within the military itself.

CBS Reveals Massive Changes For NCIS: Origins Season 3

The Camp Pendleton team is working to address the issues stemming from a recent scandal that could cause internal conflict. Meanwhile, CBS has renewed NCIS: Origins for a third season, which will be part of the network’s fall 2026-2027 schedule. However, Season 3 will be different from the first two seasons in a notable way.

Unlike the first two seasons of NCIS: Origins, which each had 18 episodes, CBS has ordered only 10 episodes for Season 3. This shorter season will allow for big changes to the NCIS franchise as a new series is introduced.

I’m so excited for the new NCIS: New York! It’s coming this fall and will be taking over the timeslot previously held by NCIS: Origins on Tuesday nights. Instead of ending the night, NCIS: Origins will be moved to a later spot, and eventually, it will be replaced by the show. Both the prequel and NCIS: Sydney will have shorter seasons this time around, but I’m still really looking forward to seeing what happens!

CBS has ordered a full season of NCIS: New York, with 20 episodes scheduled to air on Tuesdays throughout the 2026-2027 television season. This demonstrates CBS’s confidence in the new show, and it may lead to a slower production pace for NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Sydney. Origins is already exploring key moments from Gibbs’ early career, so the network might adjust the schedules for these shows accordingly.
