‘It’s not fair, it’s not bloody fair’: Hairy Biker Si King reveals he thought about ‘jumping on my bike and heading into the sunset’ after death of his best friend Dave Myers

'It's not fair, it's not bloody fair': Hairy Biker Si King reveals he thought about 'jumping on my bike and heading into the sunset' after death of his best friend Dave Myers

As a dedicated follower of the Hairy Bikers for many years, I have watched Si King and Dave Myers create a bond that transcended their television persona. Their partnership was more than just cooking and biking – it was a friendship that spanned two decades, filled with laughter, camaraderie, and an undeniable love for life.

Chef Si King shared that he contemplated setting off on his motorcycle towards the horizon following the passing of his close friend, Dave Myers.

Yes, for the past twenty years, 57-year-old ‘Si’ and Dave have collaborated closely, producing numerous beloved cooking television shows, books, and live performances.

Dave, well recognized as one-half of the duo known as The Hairy Bikers, sadly passed away at the age of 66 in February. His longtime partner, Si, was by his side throughout a prolonged fight against cancer.

Months following the death of his friend, Si has shared his battles with grief and the strategies he employed to deal with the loss of his cherished companion.

He confided to The Times, “I’ll be straightforward with you: The last few months have been a tough battle. There were moments when I felt like hopping on my bicycle and riding off towards the sunset without informing anyone of my destination. The idea was simply to disappear and never return.

At other moments, I found myself filled with anger. Anger towards that relentless ailment, anger at God, and anger at any thoughts that came to mind.

After receiving his cancer diagnosis, Dave was resolute about continuing his work to preserve a semblance of normalcy amidst the turmoil.

Speaking about filming with Dave while he was ill, Si stated: ‘Goodness gracious, that last series was undeniably the hardest thing I’ve ever faced in my life. The team could feel it; some of them having been with us since day one. We all struggled to maintain a sense of normalcy, fighting back tears.’

On certain occasions, it seemed almost unreal, like an event unfolding outside of reality itself. I found myself repeatedly pondering: this isn’t right, it’s simply not fair.

In June, Si announced that the Hairy Bikers brand is over following the tragic passing of Dave.

He said it wouldn’t be ‘respectful’ for him to continue as the Hairy Bikers on his own.

When talking to The Guardian regarding his future plans, Si expressed that it won’t be a reprise of “The Hairy Bikers” version 2.0. He mentioned that such an arrangement would not be appropriate or feasible.

The TV chef went on to say: “Indeed, it’s a period of transformation, and any shift brings about its price. Regrettably, that expense has been my dearest companion.

“My friend Dave stood out because he wholeheartedly lived in the present. At times, he drove me up the wall, and I’d ask him to express something negative for a change, but he was always enthusiastic about being a Hairy Biker.

Dave and I were quite distinct individuals, each with our unique goals and priorities, yet we held a deep affection for one another. Our approach was simple: if either of us strongly objected to an action, then we would not proceed with it.

However, Dave was often eager to agree, far more so than myself. In fact, he usually triumphed due to his unyielding optimism.

Previously in June, the wife of Si and Dave, who was a television star, guided a large group of motorcyclists to Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. This was following their cross-country bike ride from London, which they undertook as a tribute to the deceased.

Multitudes of individuals stood along the roadsides, applauding as Si guided a solemn motorcycle convoy of mourners for approximately 36 miles into the city center, having departed just over eight hours prior from the Ace Café in London.

Earlier, Dave’s wife, Lili, commended the initiatives of other motorcyclists who exceeded their fundraising goals for cancer and children’s organizations.

Speaking about the final stretch of the Dave Day ride, which goes from London to Barrow, Jason ‘Woody’ Woodcock mentioned that as many as 30,000 cyclists might have participated.

He stated that many thought it was impossible, claiming we wouldn’t manage to transfer so many individuals on schedule. However, against all odds, we accomplished the task, without even a moment’s delay.

Feeling both contentedly joyful yet completely exhausted, I’ve managed to assemble a couple of bicycles for Dave, a promise fulfilled! Thanks to the supportive bike community in Barrow and its wonderful residents, we were able to complete this task together.

‘It is amazing what can be done when people come together. The politicians should take note.’
