It’s not déjà vu. Olivia Rodrigo is back with a new album.
Okay, so Olivia Rodrigo has officially announced her third album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,” and it’s coming out June 12th. She did it in classic pop star fashion – a total Instagram makeover! She cleared out her whole feed and replaced it with the album cover, which is a really striking image of her hanging upside down, looking gorgeous in a pale pink dress. It’s definitely a visual statement, and it’s got me even more excited for the music.
“I am so proud of this record and I can’t wait for you to hear it,” Rodrigo wrote on Instagram.
Olivia Rodrigo’s new album, “You Seem Pretty Sad,” is coming two and a half years after her last, “Guts.” She and her team have been hinting at the new release since winter. To mark her artistic evolution, a mural in Los Angeles was recently changed from purple to light pink, featuring a new “OR” logo. This album is also different from her previous work because it doesn’t follow her tradition of one-word titles.
Music
Okay, so 20-year-old Olivia Rodrigo is huge – six Grammy nominations, seriously! And now she’s hitting the arena circuit for her first ever big tour. I caught a glimpse of her prepping, and honestly? She told me she’s been practicing her death-metal scream! It’s a funny little detail that just shows how much fun she’s having and how she doesn’t take herself too seriously, even amidst all the success. I’m definitely intrigued to see what that translates to on stage.
Olivia Rodrigo quickly became famous in January 2021 with her first single, “Drivers License,” released when she was just 17. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for eight weeks and led to a lot of speculation about a possible love triangle involving Rodrigo, her “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” co-star Joshua Bassett, and singer Sabrina Carpenter. She followed up this success with her album, “Sour,” released in May 2021.
In 2022, Olivia Rodrigo received seven Grammy nominations and won awards for Best New Artist, Pop Vocal Album, and Pop Solo Performance. Despite her sudden fame, she told The Times she remained unfazed by all the attention.
In December 2021, Olivia Rodrigo reflected on the unusual nature of her life, saying, ‘People keep commenting on how strange it is.’ She then added that it’s likely similar to the big adjustment many 18-year-olds experience when they go off to college.
Olivia Rodrigo’s second album, “Guts,” released in September 2023, featured a more pop-punk sound than her first album, “Sour.” She explained to The Times that preparing the album for release led her to think deeply about who she is as an artist.
Unlike when I wrote my first songs as a heartbroken teenager, this time I really focused on improving my skills as both a songwriter and a singer. It was a completely different process for me creatively.”
