It’s double the Doctors in the trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special
As a lifelong fan who’s been following the Doctor’s adventures since the days of Tom Baker, I can say that this year’s Christmas special is shaping up to be a real treat! The prospect of not one, but two Doctors in “Joy to the World” has me positively giddy with excitement.
This is an especially delightful season, as Disney unveiled the complete trailer for the double-Doctor edition of the Christmas special “Doctor Who.
In 2005, when BBC brought back the popular science fiction series Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston was chosen to play the lead character, the time-traveling alien. The first season culminated with an unexpected turn as the Doctor transformed into a different actor, David Tennant.
In response to Tennant’s debut as The Doctor, the team opted to create a special Christmas episode titled “The Christmas Invasion.” This episode turned out to be hugely popular, leading to a tradition where a Christmas-themed “Doctor Who” special became an annual event. These special episodes were typically extended in length, featuring The Doctor embarking on some holiday-time adventure.
Certain special episodes can be watched independently, while others play a significant role in the series. The special episodes from 2009, 2013, and 2017 saw the Doctor undergoing regeneration. The most recent special marked Ncuti Gatwa’s debut as the 15th Doctor, and introduced Millie Gibson as his companion, Ruby Sunday.
Currently, Disney and BBC have revealed the trailer for their upcoming special titled “Joy to the World.” This one appears to be quite entertaining, featuring a popular guest star, Nicole Coughlan, who gained fame from Netflix’s smash hit Bridgerton. What sets it apart is that it seems to feature not just one but two incarnations of the 15th Doctor, promising an exhilarating journey.
2024 finds Joy Coughlan checking into a London hotel, but her peaceful vacation takes an extraordinary turn when she stumbles upon a hidden entrance to the Time Hotel. Inside, she encounters peril, dinosaurs, and none other than the Doctor. However, a sinister plot is about to unfold worldwide, coinciding with Christmas. The Doctor’s whereabouts remain unknown, and mysterious events are taking place in Joy’s hotel room. An ancient foe of the Doctor’s lies in wait and the fate of all human history hangs precariously in the balance. Can the Doctor save Christmas across the globe simultaneously?
Due to the Doctor’s extended lifespan, their ancient adversary could potentially be any of multiple foes. The preview appears exciting with the Doctor seen aboard a train, alongside dinosaurs and other intriguing elements. What makes it even more captivating is the presence of another Doctor, who seems to be from the future. Additionally, there’s a scene where the Doctor appears to rebuke himself for isolating himself from others and delving deeper into his personality traits.
On Christmas Day, the unique episode will debut on Disney+ prior to its broadcast on the BBC. Offering a deeper perspective on the Doctor and impressive visual effects, it is set to uphold a cherished custom that both long-time and new Whovians eagerly anticipate.
Doctor Who Christmas Special airs Wednesday December 25 at 12:10/11:10c on Disney+.
