It’s about time Tom Cruise got an Oscar, the academy decides — Dolly Parton, too
It’s finally Oscar time for Tom Cruise, the Motion Picture Academy of Arts & Sciences has decided.
Dolly Parton, Debbie Allen (actor, producer, director, and dancer), Wynn Thomas (production designer), are set to receive Honorary Oscars in recognition of their substantial and previously unacknowledged impact on cinema.

Last year, theater owners and industry experts found themselves worrying about poor ticket sales during the Memorial Day weekend. However, this year presents a stark contrast.
According to Academy President Janet Yang, these four individuals are “exceptional figures who have had remarkable careers in filmmaking and whose dedication to our industry continues to make an indelible mark.
In the words of Yang, Cruise’s “extraordinary dedication” towards our film industry, the cinema experience, and the world of stunts has truly amazed everyone.
Known as one of the last authentic film stars in Hollywood, Tom Cruise has consistently driven box office sales with remarkable success. His charisma attracts audiences to blockbusters such as “Top Gun”, “Mission Impossible”, “Rain Man”, “War of the Worlds”, “Risky Business” and “Jerry Maguire”.
In previous years, he’s been nominated for four Academy Awards, with two nods for Best Actor (for the lead role), one for Best Supporting Actor, and one for Best Picture (“Top Gun: Maverick”), yet he hasn’t managed to win any of them.

Allen is being recognized for her almost five-decade long journey in the entertainment industry, where she has excelled not only as an actress but also a singer, dancer, director, producer, and executive producer. She has choreographed the worldwide televised Academy Awards ceremony on seven occasions and has graced the stage with her performances each time.
Yang stated that Debbie Allen is an innovative choreographer and actress whose work has captivated various generations and spans multiple genres,” he said. Although a large portion of her six-time Emmy-winning work is in television, her film roles under various job titles include “Ragtime,” “Fame,” “Amistad,” “Forget Paris” and others.
Thomas significantly contributed to Spike Lee’s success; he began working with him as a production designer on the 1986 film “She’s Gotta Have It” and continued their partnership in projects such as “Do the Right Thing,” “Jungle Fever,” “School Daze,” “Malcolm X” and “Da 5 Bloods.” Additionally, Thomas was involved in other notable productions like “Eddie Murphy: Raw,” “The Five Heartbeats” by Robert Townsend, and “King Richard,” which earned Will Smith an Academy Award for Best Actor.
What other movies does Thomas have on his resume? The critically acclaimed “Hidden Figures,” nominated for three Oscars, and “A Beautiful Mind,” which won four. As Yang put it, “Thomas has breathed life into some of the most timeless films through a visionary perspective and exceptional skill.

At the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, the Oscars will officially recognize stunt performers by introducing a fresh award to celebrate excellence in stunt design for the first time.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Dolly Parton will be the recipient of the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award this year. This honor is bestowed upon an individual in our film community who has made significant strides in promoting human welfare and addressing inequities. Essentially, it goes to someone who’s used their influence for good, making a positive impact on humanity – something that Dolly Parton has been doing consistently throughout her career. So, I can’t wait to see her grace the stage with her well-deserved Oscar statuette!
The well-known singer and “9 to 5” actress, whose spouse, Carl Dean, passed away in March, has consistently utilized her celebrity status for noble purposes. Parton was praised by Yang as embodying the essence of the Hersholt award through her steadfast commitment to philanthropy. Known for being the brain behind Dollywood, she has been nominated for two Original Song Oscars in the past.
The honors will be given out Nov. 16 at the academy’s 16th Governors Awards in Hollywood.
