It’s about time Beyond Paradise solved this burning mystery around its key character
In the series “Beyond Paradise,” the notorious troublemaker Archie (played by Jamie Bamber) has returned after only two episodes, and he’s already causing worry for one of Shipton Abbott’s most respected citizens.
In this discussion, instead of focusing on Martha (Sally Bretton) or Humphrey (Kris Marshall), we are shifting our attention to Humphrey’s crime-solving partner, DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi).
In my gaming world, the playful banter that wrapped up season three’s opener took a steamy turn. Jumping into the second episode of this new series, I found Esther cuddled up in Archie’s bed, and the smooth lad served her coffee to start the day.

During breakfast (which wasn’t shared by her, as she politely refused his invitation for her to stay), she clarified that their encounter was a singular instance.
Or:
Over breakfast (and with no intention of staying), she expressed that their brief meeting was a one-time occurrence.
She had expressed earlier that it wasn’t advisable, a stance she had maintained over time. Initially taken aback, Archie persisted and eventually won her heart. They ended up having drinks together after that.
In a setting that was more about friendship than romance, ‘Beyond Paradise’ took advantage of this situation to delve into Esther’s reserved and somewhat thorny attitude towards men. However, instead of shedding light on this aspect, the murder mystery show unexpectedly focused even more on her feelings towards men when they discussed dating and past relationships.
During that intimate chat, Archie turned her questions about why he is single back onto her.
She explained to him, “To be honest, I generally don’t have much fondness for men.” Yet, it was apparent that her feelings were more complex than what she initially expressed. Despite labeling them as ‘obvious’ and ‘dull,’ it became clear that this wasn’t her complete perspective. She emphasized that she isn’t against men in principle but rather sees them as having a specific role in life.
As a gamer, I’ve encountered before that Beyond Paradise has delved into Esther’s romantic background – a chat with Martha in the second season unveiled some insights about her relationship with Zoe’s dad, Melina Sinadinou’s character.
Casually over some beverages, Esther revealed that their brief romance had evolved into something deeper upon learning about her pregnancy. Over the ensuing months, they both developed feelings for each other, culminating in Zoe’s birth, unfortunately timed with his fatal motorcycle crash.
Archie tried to discuss Esther’s former partner, yet she felt uncomfortable and chose not to share such private information with him at that moment.
Esther’s history, as revealed by Beyond Paradise, offers a glimpse into why she might be cautious about getting involved with someone. At 17, she found herself pregnant with Zoe, implying that a significant and potentially traumatic event occurred in her life when she was roughly 18 years old.
Ever since then, my world has revolved around Zoe, as I confided in Martha that my romantic life has been non-existent. Yet, this doesn’t tell the whole story about my cautiousness towards men.
Through her own words, it’s clear that Zoe’s father was a kind and considerate man. He took on the duties of fatherhood well before Zoe was born, offering support to Esther during her pregnancy, especially since she was in a delicate situation at the time.
He was separated from them before they could explore what their life together might have become, a situation that was heart-rending and harrowing, but fails to account for her ingrained distrust and dislike. In terms of romantic feelings, however, she holds dear affections for her workmates Humphrey and Kelby (Dylan Llewellyn).
It might be that these feelings have been present in her for quite a while, even before she got pregnant. However, the show Beyond Paradise has only given subtle hints about her past, rather than providing a comprehensive picture, and after two whole seasons of hinting, it’s high time we learned why Esther is so secretive.
It might be the right moment for something new. After all, this is her first romantic interest since the end of Beyond Paradise, and also her initial flirtation since then. Charming Archie could possibly be the one to win her trust.
In case all else fails, perhaps it’s best to enlist Humphrey’s help now. Given his impressive efficiency in resolving last week’s puzzle with just a few hours of work, we are confident that he will swiftly unravel the mystery surrounding Esther as well.
Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
