Andy Muschietti, the director of ‘It: Welcome to Derry,’ and actress Matilda Lawler, who plays Marge, recently talked about the character’s unusual fear. Muschietti hinted that this phobia will be important in the season’s final episode.
The first episode of It: Welcome to Derry showed Marge’s insecurity about her large eyes, which were emphasized by her new glasses. This fear becomes much worse in episode 4 when ‘It’ targets her. After seeing a movie about parasitic worms, Marge has a terrifying hallucination where her eyes grow and bulge. Believing something is living inside them, she becomes hysterical and attempts to cut her eyes out. Lilly (Clara Stack) intervenes and prevents her from doing so, but Marge still manages to injure one of her eyes in the struggle.
Lawler recently told TV Insider that her character’s fear of glasses probably comes from typical teenage self-consciousness. Kids Marge’s age often worry about how they’re perceived, especially when they’re trying to fit in with a group where they don’t quite feel comfortable. Marge is trying to be accepted by the popular girls at school, and she feels her glasses are holding her back.
She struggles with a lot of insecurities, and her glasses are a big one. It was empowering, especially as a teenager, to be able to express those feelings through this story, which really taps into Marge’s vulnerabilities. The frightening scene involving eyes actually helps Marge center herself, think about her relationships, and realize where she truly belongs – with her friend Lilly and the ‘Losers.’ It shows her it’s okay to forge her own path and find acceptance outside of what others expect.
Okay, so Andy Muschietti dropped a cool little hint about Marge’s thing with glasses. Apparently, it’s not just a random quirk! He says there’s a real reason she’s so scared of them, and it’s tied to something big that’s going to be revealed in the finale. He specifically mentioned it’s about her fear of eyes and that the Coke bottle glasses are key to understanding it all. It’s way deeper than just a simple insecurity, apparently!
