It sounds like Graham McTavish will return for House of the Dragon season 3

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a particular affection for epic fantasy series and blockbuster franchises, I eagerly await the return of HBO’s House of the Dragon in its third season. The tantalizing tease from Graham McTavish, who portrayed Ser Harrold Westerling in this captivating prequel to Game of Thrones, has sparked my curiosity about his potential reappearance.

Currently, we find ourselves in the extended break between new seasons of HBO’s prequel series, “House of the Dragon.” The show concluded its second season this past summer, leaving us with a finale that hinted at several significant events in the Targaryen civil war referred to as the Dance of the Dragons. A Triarchy fleet is preparing to set sail for the Gullet to challenge Corlys Velaryon’s blockade on King’s Landing, while armies are mobilizing in the Riverlands and the Reach. When “House of the Dragon” returns for season 3, it promises to start with a bang!

It will also include at least one familiar face who sat out season 2: Ser Harrold Westerling, the former Lord Commander of the Kingsguard played by Outlander star Graham McTavish. In George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, Westerling dies before the Dance of the Dragons kicks off, but House of the Dragon opted to have him resign from the Kingsguard instead, leaving in disgust during the Green Council coup rather than sully his white cloak by taking part in any backstabbing against Rhaenyra.

In Martin’s book, Westerling’s character is absent during the Dance of the Dragons, leading fans to wonder if McTavish’s character would reappear on screen. However, in a recent interview with The Nerd Shepherd at Heroes Dutch Comic Con, McTavish hinted that he was set to film House of the Dragon season 3, stating that “I believe season three will start filming in March next year.” Given that McTavish wouldn’t typically discuss upcoming projects if he wasn’t involved, this statement suggests a strong possibility that we may see McTavish return to House of the Dragon in its third season. Although McTavish didn’t explicitly say “I’m in House of the Dragon season 3,” his comments are intriguing enough to warrant further discussion.

Graham McTavish wasn’t in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom because of House of the Dragon

McTavish’s claim that filming for the show starts in March 2025 aligns with other reports, suggesting he has insider knowledge. Naturally, this leads to curiosity about how Ser Harrold Westerling re-enters the storyline. Will he serve Rhaenyra or assist Otto Hightower in his challenging situation in the Reach? There are numerous possibilities at play.

As a huge fan, I must say that McTavish has an impressive work schedule. For instance, during our chat, he mentioned the upcoming “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” the sequel to the 2023 Aquaman film featuring Jason Momoa. Interestingly, while McTavish played Atlantean King Atlan in the original Aquaman movie, he was absent from the second installment. Now we understand why: it seems he was engrossed in shooting “House of the Dragon.

He clarified that initially, he had planned to take part, but he was engrossed in watching “House of the Dragon” simultaneously. The organizers were attempting to adjust his schedule for both “Aquaman” and “House of the Dragon”, hoping it could work out. However, despite appearing promising at first, it ultimately proved impractical.

Graham McTavish wants to join Star Wars, Marvel, or Harry Potter

McTavish has made a name for himself by participating in many popular genre series, fewer actors can match this achievement. He portrayed Dougal Mackenzie in Outlander, Ser Harrold Westerling in House of the Dragon, Dwalin the dwarf in The Hobbit films, and is currently playing Sigismund Dijkstra in The Witcher. It seems that only Star Wars, Harry Potter, or the Marvel Cinematic Universe remain on his acting bucket list, and McTavish appears to be eager to join these franchises as well.

I grew up with Star Wars, and I was also a huge fan of Marvel comics. I still have my comics from the 1960s. So I would love to be part of those universes, and my kids would love it if I appeared in the Harry Potter universe. I was a big fan of the books every year as soon as they came out, and I loved them, I am open to all those worlds. I would be very surprised if I could do them all, but even one would be great.

It’s possible that an opportunity for McTavish to star in the upcoming HBO’s Harry Potter series might be forthcoming. Given that HBO is producing a new series, it’s reasonable to assume that an actor of McTavish’s talent would be a valuable addition. The Nerd Shepherd even suggested he’d make a suitable wizard for the show, and he seemed enthusiastic: “I appreciate your sentiment. I’d be thrilled to take on that role.

Based on McTavish’s history, it wouldn’t shock me to find him associated with any of those three teams. However, before that happens, he will appear in ‘The Witcher’ season 4 and ‘House of the Dragon’ season 3.
