Issey Miyake to Debut ‘Type-XIII Atelier Oï’ Collaboration at Milan Design Week

Issey Miyake is all set to reveal a unique display at the forthcoming Milan Design Week. Dubbed TYPE-XIII Atelier Oï project, this collaborative endeavor unites Swiss-based design studio atelier oï with A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, aiming to discover groundbreaking ideas that blend “a wire element” and “a fabric component” into inventive lighting items. The showcase offers preliminary models of these creations in an installation style, highlighting the blend of artistry and practicality.

The project embodies a joint dream between atelier oï, known for its architectural and product design prowess, and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, a leader in garment construction innovation by collaborating across various fields. This collaboration, deeply rooted in the creative process, fuses different viewpoints and methods to produce pioneering designs that challenge conventional aesthetics. Moreover, it delves beyond clothing to investigate fresh concepts for “a piece of cloth” within lighting accessories.

The “O Series,” jointly developed with Japanese lighting company Ambientec, focuses on design that caters to human needs and mobility. Drawing inspiration from the grace of flowers, these lamps boast organic pleats crafted from eco-friendly “Steam Stretch” fabric – a material innovation by A-POC ABLE. Upon exposure to heat, this material creates sturdy three-dimensional patterns. The interaction between light, shadow, and fabric adds depth to the lamps’ design. With a detachable frame and collapsible shade, the lamps can easily adapt to different settings and living quarters without creating a hassle.

The showcase additionally presents “The A Series,” an original lighting idea from A-POC, characterized by its sleek knit fabric construction. The lampshades in this series are manufactured as pre-knitted rolls of fabric, assuming a three-dimensional shape when wireframes are incorporated. This creative method enables customization by cutting and connecting the knitted shades, enabling the creation of individual, paired, or tripled fixtures. In collaboration with Spanish lighting company PARACHILNA, a prototype of a pendant light from this series will be showcased at the event, highlighting both brands’ skill and dedication to authentic design.

The two series underscore the partnership’s commitment to blending textile and lighting advancements, creating items that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. As these prototypes progress, they are set to enter commercial markets, broadening the horizons of design in modern living spaces. Keep an eye out for further information about their development and release in the coming months.
