Is Top Boy star’s new Irish detective drama any good?

As a gamer with a penchant for crime dramas and a soft spot for strong female leads, I found myself drawn to Lisa Dwan’s performance in Blackshore. Having binge-watched Top Boy multiple times, I was eager to see how she would transition from the gritty London underworld to the murky Irish coastline.

Actress Lisa Dwan steals the spotlight in the latest Irish detective series titled “Blackshore”. This is her first role following her departure from the popular Netflix show in 2022. In this new production, she portrays Detective Inspector Fia Lucey.

The police inspector finds herself uneasily back in her childhood town, compelled to face the accusations against her deceased father and grapple with the grim outcome that has befallen her family.

Amidst her own distress, she is also asked to probe into the vanishing of town resident Róisín Hurley. This case brings back painful memories in the town about Fia’s vanished babysitter Chloe Whelan. They urge her to dig up answers and fight for justice for both women.

For Dwan, there’s a shift from the drug trade scene to a new, shadowy criminal environment – the setting for Blackshore. Unlike her character Lizzie from Top Boy, Dwan finds herself on the other end of morality in this story. Despite their differences, there’s an uncanny resemblance between these two contrasting characters that is hard to ignore.

Lizzie and Fia both have an enigmatic nature, which makes it challenging for others to get past their surface and truly know them intimately.

Although admirers of the British crime show acknowledge the cool demeanor that Dwan masterfully portrays, it’s essential to note that these two characters are stark opposites.

While Lizzie’s aloof behavior stemmed from her need for self-preservation, a relentless drive to navigate the dangerous criminal underworld she found herself in using whatever methods were required – Fia maintains distance due to lingering emotional wounds.

As I delve deeper into this game’s narrative, fragments of my past unravel bit by bit in vivid flashbacks. These memories piece together a portrait of who I was and help me comprehend why the scars of long-forgotten events still hurt so deeply, making it hard for me to form bonds with others.

The instances when Dwan’s Fia momentarily removes her mask to reveal genuine vulnerability leave a lasting impression, adding layers of complexity and mystery to her character.

Despite Blackshore not possessing the same magnetic charm as its protagonist, it is Fia’s forceful and captivating debut that initially hooks the audience. Her compelling reason for returning home serves as a powerful foundation for the unfolding narrative.

The storyline steadily grows in complexity, weaving thought-provoking themes such as remorse, sorrow, and atonement. It leaves you pondering one question after another, as new enigmas are presented. However, the show’s rhythm isn’t consistently sustained. After the initial introduction, the plot progression slows significantly from episode to episode, with the resolution of cases advancing gradually without much suspense.

When scenes brimming with activity – whether they involve conflict or intriguing, substantial plot developments – are effective, this is primarily due to the actors, their chemistry, and their dedication to the narrative. The characters appear genuine, adding authenticity to a world with captivating complexities that keep you engaged, even during prolonged periods.

In this production, Dwan and Rory Keenan complement each other exceptionally well as a duo. Keenan portrays Cian Furlong, Fia’s underling, and although they don’t exhibit a harmonious dynamic akin to yin and yang or engage in humorous back-and-forth, their tension, mutual suspicion, and competitive spirit in assessing each other are equally captivating.

Their relationship is a delicate alliance that needs care and growth, making their shared moments all the more precious. Just as the program demands, it takes perseverance to uncover its depths, revealing, much like Fia and Cian, a richness beneath the surface.
