Is this a dance show or a popularity contest? Strictly judges’ fear after Pete makes it to semi-final and most talented dances are booted off
As a lifelong follower of Strictly Come Dancing, I must admit that this season has left me feeling a bit like a sad tango dancer – spinning and twirling, but never quite hitting the mark. The recent developments have stirred up a storm of emotions within me, much like when I tried to waltz with a particularly lively partner who seemed more interested in the mirrorball trophy than in our dance.
The more skilled celebrities, it seems, are causing quite a stir among the strict judges as they find themselves being eliminated from the show, while those with less dancing ability remain.
Craig Revel Horwood appears to be astonished by the eliminations of athletes like Montell Douglas and actors such as Jamie Borthwick, while reality television personality Pete Wicks advanced to the semifinals with lower scores than his peers.
Strictly has long considered itself more solemn than other reality shows, yet its judges and certain BBC officials are growing concerned that it’s starting to resemble a popularity contest instead.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement after Wicks and the show’s pioneering blind contestant, Chris McCausland, reached last night’s semi-final! This means that at least one of them is moving forward to next week’s grand finale. What a journey it has been so far!
The situation has created a dilemma, with insiders fearing the two men will win places at the expense of others, such as model Tasha Ghouri and singer JB Gill – who have received high scores.
A source shared: ‘This transition has proved challenging for the judges, as they are renowned dancers and choreographers. Their lives have revolved around striving for excellence in dance. Therefore, observing the show evolve into a popularity contest instead of focusing on dancing skills… one might describe it as disheartening.’
Contemplating the fact that Pete seems to have sailed through the show without encountering any risks, whereas Tasha and Montell have had to dance off multiple times, has left some observers wondering about the direction Strictly might take in the future.
‘It is turning into a popularity contest rather than a dance one.’
Last Sunday, Ms. Douglas, aged 38, was asked to leave her residence after an engaging dance competition with Tasha Ghouri, a skilled professional dancer. The previous week, Ms. Douglas had outperformed Borthwick during their close call in the bottom two, ultimately leading to his departure.
Wicks, 36, and McCausland have yet to be in a dance-off.
Primarily, the show prefers to bring on board skilled celebrity dancers, like Layton Williams from last year and Ashley Roberts in 2018. A source revealed, “Audience members at home enjoy watching elegant dance performances.
It brings great pleasure to see an outstanding show. However, things have shifted, and this change has led to some challenges. We find ourselves in a situation where the dance skills are not as exceptional as they typically are, but what we have is celebrities who viewers truly appreciate watching instead.
‘But the public vote, and they have the right to say who they want in the show.’
